After reading thru the alsa guide I find that my sound works but only half of it.... Let me explain
CD Player works fine.....
No sound from sound events
Multimedia System Selector (output set to ALSA) Test works fine (Input set to OSS) No sound thru test ...no errors.
I am using genkernel-x86-2.6.12-gentoo-r10... _________________ My Mom didnt raise a quitter!

Sorry, but that's not what I call "explaining" a problem. Please specify which applications you are unable to get any sound from.
Which Desktop Environment are you using? This is important to know in order to fix the problem with your "sound events".
And what do you mean with "Multimedia System Selector"? |

I am running a Gome desktop. On the top panel if you go to desktop - prefrences -scroll down to Sound a box opens then click on sound events you can highlight a sound then click on play. (No Sound when you click play) I have checked alsamixer for volume settings.
On the top panel if you go to desktop - prefrences - scroll down to Multimedia System Selector a box opens I would gather that it shows your input and output sound structure. When I click on test button for output I get a steady beep The output shows Advance linux sound Architecture. When I click on the test button for input no sound no error message. Input shows OSS - Open Sound System. _________________ My Mom didnt raise a quitter! |

That sounds like a gnome problem and not like a problem with your sounddriver.
As long as you have sound in applications like xmms everything should be fine.
I can't help with the gnome problem, though because I'm not using gnome. |

Turns out I never put "alsa" in the USE flags. All sound is working now. Thanks for the help HotShotDJ. _________________ My Mom didnt raise a quitter! |
