when i do:

/etc/init.d/lighttpd start

it says its already been started and an attempted restart or stop gives me:

start-stop-daemon: warning: failed to kill 5441: No such process

Is there a lock file or something thats not deleted?

Start up an instance of lighttpd using the actual command "lighttpd" then echo the pid of that process to "/var/run/lighttpd.pid" Then you can stop it using /etc/init.d/lighttpd stop

I found it in this post: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-387784-highlight-init+scripts.html
