is anyone out there who does not mind pointing me to a posting in the forum where someone has already compile the kernel and is working for example. the doc is not step by step. just want to know what to compile as M and so on during the process.

Take a look at the FAQ -- KC 11 and 7 should be what you're looking for.
Basically, you should know what hardware is built into your computer (find out using the hardware manuals that went with it or by typing "lspci" for hints) and then try to find it in the kernel-configuration menus (what you get after typing "make menuconfig"); for almost all kernel options there is a small help-text available, although the usefulness of this may vary. |
