i don't understand what the problem is, i've been reading for days and have come across alot of good info but nothing that solves my problem.
i set up a server on a sparc box and everything was working fine until i had to shut it down so i could move it. when i booted it, it never saw the internet. it said it loaded everything ie apache and such. i talked to a friend thats been helping me with this thing and he suggested i load the livecd and i set the ifconfig eth0 and gateway file (again) but i can't ping anything via name or ip. it keeps saying "ping: bad number of packets to transmit." no matter what i do.
here's my Kernel IP routing table

i dont know why it is set to 70.89.217.80 because it should be 70.89.217.81
the modem/router is 70.89.217.86
i'm really trying to learn all of this stuff...there's a whole lot to learn.
i'd ask my friend, but he hasn't been around
any help would be great |

try to ping the loopback(127.0.0.1) interface and after that your own ip.
if it doesn't work with the loopback, i guess it si something wrong with your network card.
if the ping to your own ip doesnt work i think it is something wrong with tcp/ip protocol. _________________ "I can't go on. I'll go on."

when i try to ping the loopback i get this
Usage: ping [-LRUbdfnqrvVaA] [-c count] [-i interval] [-w deadline]
[-p pattern] [-s packetsize] [-t ttl] [-I interface or address]
[-M mtu discovery hint] [-S sndbuf]
[ -T timestamp option ] [ -Q tos ] [hop1 ...] destination
i get this same respnce anytime i use an ip instead of a site name.
i dont know why it would be my network card, i had this thing up and running with a site and everything on it right before i shut it down.

vrey strange. if i were you i would try to reemerge net-misc/iputils. this package contains ping program.
Very strange
if you try
ping localhost ?
