Softmodem driver question

I have a laptop with an integrated Intel sound/modem chipset. The modem controller is "Intel Corp. 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Modem Controller."

I noticed during my last kernel upgrade that there's now an experimental driver for the "Intel/SiS/nVidia/AMD MC97 Modem."

I have a few questions:

1) is this the right driver for my modem? I realize that my modem is an AC97 and the kernel config script says MC97, but I'm hoping that "MC" is being used in the generic sense of "Modem Controller."

2) does this kernel driver mean that I don't need to shell out $20 for a linuxant driver?

3) how experimental is experimental? Has anyone gotten it to work reliably?

I'm hoping someone has been down this road and could save me some experimenting.

Actually, I think I answered my own question with the diagnostic script linked to on this page:

It appears my modem has a conexant chip and thus is probably not supported by the kernel driver. If anyone knows otherwise, please let me know.
