After emerging nvidia-kernel and nvida-glx, I procede to "modprobe nvidia" as it says in the nvidia guide.

I recieve this error:
FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.13-gentoo-r5/video/nvidia.ko): No such device

Please help :?

I have a nvidia ti 4200 card.

ok make sure you don't have the nvidia kernel built into the kernel

also make sure you emerge nvidia-driver after you compiled the kernel
Everytime you upgrade the kernel or modifiy it you must reemerge nvidia

I just removed framebuffer from my kernel, going to try again when it finishes recomiling.

On a side note, should I have my sound card as a module or as a "*" in my kernel?

If you just compiled a new kernel, check if you put in the nvidia frame buffer. You can't if you expect to use the nvidia kernel driver. I just did this myself. I know that the 2.6.14 kernel gives this as an option, but I forgot that you can only compile in the vesafb module. Hope that helps!!

Ok, I got rid of framebuffer in the kernel (2.6.13-gentoo-r5)

Still same error :<

ok, Ill update to 2.6.14. Do I need to change anything if I change my kernel? I know I have to edit grub, but anything else?

This is my glxinfo:

My dmesg: (only nvidia bit)

nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
NVRM: The NVIDIA probe routine was not called for 1 device(s).
NVRM: This can occur when a driver such as rivafb or rivatv was
NVRM: loaded and obtained ownership of the NVIDIA device(s).
NVRM: Try unloading the rivafb (and/or the rivatv) kernel module
NVRM: (or reconfigure your kernel without rivafb support), then
NVRM: try loading the NVIDIA kernel module again.
NVRM: No NVIDIA graphics adapter probed!

I dont have fb support at all in my kernel :S

I'm helping a friend with the exact same problem. He can startx, though, but when he does everything stays on the screen (I guess the best way for me to describe it would be that his screen isn't 'cleaning' itself from where things are visually, so they leave traces) Do you have the same problem Kassi?
