Hello masters,

I been trying to install Gentoo 2005 on my laptop. I have followed the manual and so far things are good. Right now I'm at the stage where I have to emerge the kernel with 'emerge gentoo-sources'. It failes however with "Resolving reactivated.net...failed: Temporary failure in name resolution !!! Couldnt download genpatched-2.6-11.03-extras.tar.bz2. Aborting"

Any ideas as to how this can be fixed? Thanks

Hi mentallysilent,

great to have you on the show! ;-) Well, I can't figure out what's going on, could you please give some more information. Which stage install did you do (1,2 or 3). Have you a working internet connection (try "ping www.google.com" or something similar) and just emerge fails to connect to a mirror. If this is the case: are you sitting behind a firewall? Try "emerge-webrsync". Maybe one of this propositions fixes your problem already. If not, please give some more clues! But hopefully, this won't be necessary!!

Code:
ping google.com

should fail:P

then ping
Code:
ping 216.239.39.99

This means you do not have DNS info properly set up.
/etc/resolv.conf contains the adresses...

I'm having a similar problem, but none of that is helping. I have a working connection, I'm sending this message through the liveCD & my new chrooted gentoo. I am behind a firewall, so that's probably involved somehow. I copied my resolv.conf, hell I even did a mirrorselect to make sure I was hitting a good one. ping www.google.com fails with an unknown error, and emerge-webrsync fails as well stating that there is no md5sum available yet? Any new ideas, or am I gonna just have to bring my whole network down and directly connect this one machine? :(

Well, I tried pluggin this machine directly into my cable modem and it still didn't work! I'm about to try the expirmental grahical installer, see if I have some more luck with it... if that doesn't work, I don't know what I'm gonna do. I've installed Gentoo on this machine before, so I know it's not a hardware issue :(

Well, that didn't work... they weren't kidding when they called that "The Alpha"...heh. It ruined all my partitions...argh. So, back to the drawing board. Any ideas? Please.... :)

Let's sum it up. You have a WORKING connection right now, but some things like ping and rsync does NOT work, right?

BTW: Graphical installer is still very alpha;-) and has nothing to do with the actual problem as it's just a frontend to gentoo.
