I've just installed gentoo on my Athlon XP 3000+ machine and everything went well (so far) except for getting xorg to work stably.
My first problem is that using the normal "nv" graphics drivers creates an unstable x environment which locks up my system after
a few minutes use, and my second is that when trying to get the nvidia drivers emerged it seems to complete but I can't modprobe
the nvidia module and it comes up with a fatal error.

I've tried using the official installer from Nvidia but it always fails with the error that my kernel source doesn't match my kernel.
However I've tried two genkernel compiles and one normal compile from the kernel source which all work fine but still the installer
doesn't recognise the kernel source. Oh and I'm pretty sure the symlink is correct too.

Can anyone please help me with this?

You might try looking in your character devices and making sure you have agp port enabled. Can you post the error message?

I had the same problem, turns out it was due to having the nvidia framebuffer enabled in the kernel...

1. removed nvidia fb support from kernel
2. enabled vesafb-tn? fb
3. recompiled, copied to /boot
4. emerged nvidia-glx, nvidia-kernel
5. reboot
6. rejoiced

and don't forget to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf; change "nv" to "nvidia"...

hope that helps, it worked for me.
