I have an AMD64 and I am worried that the version that I am downloading from http://linux.softpedia.com/progDownload/Gentoo-RR64-LiveDVD-Download-5256.html is the wrong version. Sure it says it is the Gentoo RR64 LiveDVD 2.60 version, but when i activate the link to download it, it comes up with Gentoo-R44-2.60.4.iso and I have tried looking everywhere for the 2.60 version of the RR64. I do not wish to use my bandwith to download this file if i can just download the alternative 2.50 which may work, although from reading through this post it seems to have some problems. Can you please help, much appreciated. _________________ -= the world is a reflection of yourself =- |

Sorry to be rude wk, but you didnt answer my question. I just want to know if the version im downloading from the site i got it from will run fine on amd64, for that i hear the 2.50 has some flaws. I would rather download a fully working distro from the start then waste of 3gb+ on upload/download for this file. _________________ -= the world is a reflection of yourself =- |

1: Your LiveDVD was a nice project, but since you stopped paying heed to users' general comments, it has gone waaaay down. I have been writing about my own live dvd for some time now, I hope to get it released any time now. I have the hosting and bandwidth needed.
Since I have been hosting RR64 2.50 and unofficially RR4 2.6x, there were non stop some script kiddies trying to get access to my server, since I have put up restriction to 1 connection/IP.
2: You should check your official forums scripts. Registration doesn't work. Even activated user account doesn't work.
3: Why the HELL do you try increasing the size of your DVDs since the most that matters is STABILITY and SPEED.
WHO the HELL gives a damn about 10 window managers.?
I understand n00bs need a user-friendly environment to work, and you ARE trying to promote *nix in every way possible, but that's waaaaaay off mark. As I have written in earlier suggestions, a LiveCD/DVD has to be LIGHTWEIGHT, FAST, STABLE.
Nobody will be interested in using a liveDVD which takes AGES to load, the same goes for applications.
4: I used to get excited about reiser4. But I have lately studied that filesystem in depth, and things you can do with it are possible with other FS's, provided you have got a lot of RAM.
It implements functions on the userspace level, consuming CPU power. Believe me, even with a dual opteron setup as mine, database access and synchronous access for any other use can be quite CPU intensive.
The best would be to mount all the necessary stuff as a TMPFS in your RAM, which is WAAAAY faster than your HDD, even on Reiser4.
Anyway, EVEN be it Reiser4, without journaling that filesystem won't last long.
5: I am a net-admin and sys-admin, trying to get a PRACTICAL approach, I just hope you will take the criticism positively.
Adding functionality does work sometimes, but not at the cost of stability and speed.
Linus understood that a looong time ago, since the age of 2.6 kernels, where guys were trying to get it as functional as possible.
But what happens then?
You get new functions, but at the same time add bugs and stability issues. You should try fixing pending problems instead of adding new ones. |

how much disk space is required to apply 2.60.4 patch to 2.60.3 iso?
i asked because i tried to apply patch from livedvd with iso on 9gb partition with 300mb swap 1gb ram and got:
Code: |
rr4dvd 2.60.3-to-2.60.4 # ./patch-iso
Splitting files because xdelta does not support >2GB files
Getting size...
File is...621690880
File splitted in: Gentoo-RR4-2.60.3.iso.000,Gentoo-RR4-2.60.3.iso.001, Gentoo-RR4-2.60.3.iso.002 an d Gentoo-RR4-2.60.3.iso.003
Applying patch to file Gentoo-RR4-2.60.3.iso.000
Applying patch to file Gentoo-RR4-2.60.3.iso.001
Applying patch to file Gentoo-RR4-2.60.3.iso.002
Applying patch to file Gentoo-RR4-2.60.3.iso.003

Done. New file is Gentoo-RR4-2.60.4.iso . Burn it !

NOT TRUE:
about 5 GB. This because your ISO is splitted in 4 parts and then every part is patched. _________________ http://www.sabayon.org

I tend to listen RR4 users but if I don't answer, it's not because I don't matter you, but because I receive a lot of e-mails a day. Thank you for your support Adwin and I'm sorry to hear that some script kiddies try to connect to your FTP. If you want, when your LiveDVD will be ready, you can have a section (like RR4/RR64 Linux) on lxnay dEsigN.

It should be fixed. I'm migrating data from my home server to another.

Ten Window managers? Window managers are window managers. I am talking about Desktop Environments. That's different. Linux, and Gentoo, is about choice. I have chosen to include the possible and the impossible, so, if you want to build up a desktop PC quickly, RR4 is the answer. Internet Kiosk, and NX, capabilities are great, aren't they?

I don't use Reiser4 for production servers and for my server. But I love to test bleeding edge technologies on spare computers.

Sorry, RR4 old iso is splitted, so 2,4GB x 2. Patches are untarred, 400Mb, patching creates other 2,4GB that will be merged using cat.
I have to enhance a little bit these scripts, but they work.
Tonight I'll work on them and I hope to help you. _________________ http://www.sabayon.org |

I am going to create another bigger partition and try from there.
PS
Thanks for all your hardwork and a great livedvd, but it amazes me just how un-appriciative some people can be when someone does all this hardward for free!
If the Livedvd does not suit your requirements then create your own or find another project. _________________ Work Station - 64bit

Ok just to let you know, created an 18gb partition and moved files there and patch worked ok, seems you need more tham 6.5gb free space. _________________ Work Station - 64bit

It should work _________________ http://www.sabayon.org |

I just wrote about this on lxnay's official forums
Link: http://lxnay.no-ip.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=34
In short, you need 7GB of space, but with some script-tweaking it only takes 3GB! |

minor bug: in isolinux you show "gentoo resolution=1280x1024" (whatever) as an example, but the right one would be "gentoo res=1280x1024"
I just figured that out cuz my widescreen wasn't detected properly...
BUT this LiveDVD is awesome, keep on going, but I won't touch the Installer again, it destroyed my partition table... (working again, soo.... ) |

Well, this may have been covered but for those of us too poor to buy DVD writers, is there a RR4 LIVECD of some sort? of which we can burn to CD?
Thankyou for your patronage.

Yes, we can have all of those stuff, but there's a little problem. Everything that is stored in /home, is mounted r/w in RAM, and on old computers, 1Mb of RAM makes the difference. So, is possible to install FFOX extensions on a system-wide directory? (like /usr/lib/MozillaFirefox (compiled from source firefox package) or /opt/firefox (firefox-bin package) ) _________________ http://www.sabayon.org |
