Hi, the new KDE is ready!
There is a guide for help our member to make the update before the Stable gentoo built.

Code: | su

in your editor, add following line in the file:

*if you dont want x.org 7 rc3 or other nonkde package, remove them for the list, using stable built is always recomanded.
Now, the longest part
Good luck with your new KDE 3.5, there is few minor bugs but they will be fixe in 3.5.1, for more information read next page of this thread.
*thanks to dalek who helped me to make the update.
for delete older version of kde:
Code: | emerge -P `emerge -Pp world | grep kde-base` |

Even though 3.5 was released today, it is still masked in portage (~amd64 ~ppc ~sparc ~x86). You could go through the arduous task of adding each package to package.keywords, or you could simply wait till it is unmasked (hopefully soon?). |

emerge kde or kde-meta, depending on which set of ebuilds you started with.
It's still masked, though, so either unmask it or give it a bit of time. |

Couldn't you just enter:

at the command line and get the same thing? _________________ I suck at signatures. |

It's really not too difficult:
Code: |
# for ebuild in kde-base/*; do echo "${ebuild} ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords; done
|
Code: |
# for ebuild in kde-base/*; do echo ">=${ebuild}-3.5_beta1" >> /etc/portage/package.unmask; done

well, you could, but it is bad idea - next run of emerge -u world would want to downgrade to stable version of kde. |

Hello guys,
is there some fast KDE 3.5 mirror out there? ftp.kde.org is pretty overloaded... |

Nope - notice the '>=' .... greater than or equal.
It will actually install the latest available packages.
Using *_beta was more usefull a few days ago - when some ebuilds were tagged as beta and some were rc.
If you look in /usr/portage/profile/package.mask, and grep for kde -- you'll see that they're all masked from _alpha or greater. |

I'm upgrading now. I'm using the -b option so if anyone wants what I compile let me know. It would be for the P4 arch.

True, but thankfully, "emerge -U" still works (why they're even thinking of removing this feature is beyond me.). _________________ I suck at signatures. |

So I have never had the pleasure of upgrading KDE, so is there anything special that needs to be done?
When I first installed KDE I just emerged kde-meta, so if I just wait for it to become unmasked and do the same it will upgrade? (Also, stupid question, but it won't overwrite the config files that have all my personalizations to the menus, etc, will it?) |

I'm n00b too, but i think, it doesn't delete configs, but i have heared that some files are needed to be deleted manually, or smth gets f*cked up Don't know, that files in /home/username these are. _________________ There is no spoon! |

Pretty much what UnHoly616 mentioned, your .kde config stuff should be fine between versions. The meta-kde should be slotted, so it would be a case of emerging that and changing the xsession in rc.conf to kde-3.5.
Actually I've got a question for the thread (not to thread jack) - but are the split ebuilds for KDE slotted at all ? Looking to upgrade to 3.5 here myself. _________________ Like the Roman, I seem to see "the River Tiber foaming with much blood" |

What is all this slot thing about?
Why does it try to install it in a new slot, side by side with the old verison?
Any way to force it to upgrade? or any reason not? |

Maybe i'm doing something wrong but if I try :
Code: | ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -av kde |
Portage tries to emerge : Quote: |
kde-base/kde-3.4.3 |
I've correctly did emerge --sync
Is it normal ? |

While we're on the subject when did kde 3.5 enter ~x86? I "emerge sync"'d today and I still see only 3.4.3. |

Yes, this is normal. There are "4" software stages
* normal e.g. x86 (for every day user)
* unstable e.g. ~x86 (for people who can live with unstable software)
* masked +M (for packages, which are extremly new or have been rewriten)
* hardly masked ~M (even to unstable for developers *g*)
currently kde-3.5 is masked, but should be unstableized soon

look out for the colors on the right site =) |

There's also a lot of other programs that are masked to allow the full installation of KDE 3.5......I'm upgrading to 3.4.3 right now.....I'll maybe hit 3.5 sometime soon. _________________ Mayhem G4 (Asus z71v) |

Let me emphasize something here:
"ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~whatever [command]" should never be done!
It's not just a bad idea, it'll mess up your entire system. The short explanation is that nowhere is stored which package is ~ and which is not. The long explanation is present on the forum. Just use /etc/portage/package.[use,keywords,unmask,mask]. Take it from an, eh, apprentice |

Apparently there are a lot of dependencies that are alos masked (hal > .5, dbus > .33, pyrex > .9) which won't allow me to emerge. I'm a little leary of unmasking each of these packages, especially hal and dbus since I have had so much trouble with them in the past.
The dbus ebuilds really confuse me as they are up to .50-r1 and nothing above .30 is unmasked. Is there a shortage of people to test them, or is there actually something odd going on?
In short, I would love to update to 3.5, heck I've been looking forward to it for a couple months now, but I don't want to completly frak my system.
How long should it take to srt out all of the masking and 3.5 becomes generally available (ie no masks)? Is it worth it to wait? |

| well, you could, but it is bad idea - next run of emerge -u world would want to downgrade to stable version of kde. | True, but thankfully, "emerge -U" still works (why they're even thinking of removing this feature is beyond me.). | Because maybe some devs have seen too many users trying to fix their broken left foot by shooting themselves in the right one.
