|
|
Hey all...
I just did an emerge -up --deep world, which among other things upgraded my xfree to 4.3.something and upgraded my Nvidia drivers to the latest versions.
Problems...
X wont start...
When it goes to load KDM on boot it looks just like it usually does when you compile a new kernel without having reemerged the nvidia drivers.
Any idea wheat may be wrong? Does this upgrade of X and nvidia drivers require major config file surgery?
Thanks,

Oh And I forogt to mention the important part..
It says that screens are found, but none of the are properly configured.
It says it fails to initialize the nvidia kernel module.
These same conrfigured screens initialized the 3139 kernel module just fine though.
Any ideas what could be wrong?
Thanks,

New nvidia driver has a different name (if you emerged that one). It's nvidia instead of NVdriver. I saw some of this going on in #gentoo today but didn't get to see the resolutions, so that's the only suggestion I've got. |

Thanks for your suggestion, but the Driver for the 3139 nvidia driver was named "nvidia" as well. I also checked the latest nvidia driver readme, and it claims the driver field should say "nvidia" whcih it does in my XF86 config file..
It would seem this would be the problem, since X cant load the nvidia driver module, but for some reason it isn't.
Anyone have any other ideas? _________________ ----

FWIW, that's in reference to /etc/modules.autoload, not for your XF86Config (well, yes it'll be nvidia in there too). Check modules.autoload to make sure that it says nvidia instead of NVdriver (I'm now assuming that you're using the most recent). Or, for that matter, just modprobe it. |

Ahh Thank you, that solved some confusion.
I added nvidia to the module autoload and it worked just fine.
I wonder why I didnt have to load the old driver module in autoload or modprobe it. Did it do it o its own? _________________ ----

You need to reinstall the opengl part but it shouldn't prevent X from loading, just glxinfo to crash it |

the older nvidia-kernel was a module called 'NVdriver' and the newer is called 'nvidia'. AFAIK the older had to be loaded using the /etc/modules.autoload. After emering the new driver I removed that line from autoload and did a modules-update and all was fine. No need to add the 'nvidia' to /etc/modules.autoload. |

Hmm So if it isnt being manually modprobed or added to modules.autoload...
When is the damn thing being loaded?
This is confusing me _________________ ----

This thread was a life saver
I had the exact same problem.. I updated the modules.autoload and everything was almost perfect.
I just had to go back and reset my Xservers file to use -dpi 100 -depth 24.

just so you know, you don't need to put anything related to nvidia in you modules.autoload file anymore (if you use devfs that is). The module is being loaded automagically by /etc/modules.d/nvidia

Hmm I use devfs, but it doesnt seem to do that for me. I have to add it in modules.autoload in order for it to work, but I didn't on the old drivers 3139.. They just worked on their own.
Have I done something wrong? _________________ ----

Same problem here... I use devfsd as well, but I have to put the nvidia module in /etc/modules.autoload or nothing happens... |

if you load X on boot and nvidia module doesn't get loaded, then yes, you are right, there is a problem.
on the other hand, if you boot without X, it is normal that nvidia doesnt seem to get loaded (it will not show up with lsmod) don't worry about that. Once you startx, then the module will be automagically loaded (again, no need to put it in modules.autoload).
