I was thinking up a partitioning scheme for my next 160 GB RAID-0 system I'll set up after Christmas, going through that helpful topic that is sticky. Like an insane setup with a partition for /opt, /usr, /var, etc. When someone in a chat brought up a good point:

Moving files between partitions would be SLOW. Especially since portage would build stuff in /var/tmp, then have to move it to another partition.

So, is having a bunch of partitions really worth it? Where's the trade-off point?

The trade off point should be decided by what kind of system you are building (what it will be used for) and what kind of partitioning you are comfortable with. For servers I prefer a lot of defined partitions to ease backup and expansion. For my desktops and laptop I just use /boot, / and /home in addition to the swap partititon. I store my music on a secondary slow IDE drive that isn't used for anything else.

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Gentoo Chat.

If you're not building a server, i'd just go with /, /boot and /home. Experience shows that /opt is always too small and / too big or something like that.
