|
|
I'm planning to put together a fun little project involving the above hardware.
I've done a bunch of reading about the Turion working on basic 754 board, it needs one that supports revision-E chips.
I've read that driver support for Nvidia boards are looking pretty poor for the 6100/6150 right now.
I'm guessing the ATI support is semi-working? Can't find much info.
Sis also has a chipset, but I;m pretty sure that won't meet my needs/likes.
I need the video to work, as well as the frequency-scaling (more software thn ardware I think), and SATA. Hopefully I'll be adding a video card as well in the future for multi-display support (possibly as many as 5, but that's a different topic...) Sound would be very nice, but not required. LAN is irrelivant, except for the install/setup, but I have a bunch of NIC's I can put in temporarily.
I'm looking at probably these 2 right now, but I' open to suggestions:
MSI, Radeon 200, $78
or
Asrock, Geforce 6100, $61
Thoughts? Anyone know how the Radeon drivers are? or how either one of these would handle a seperate video card?

My experience is go with NVidia.
I had no problem setting my desktop up with the nvidia drivers. But I only have a GF 4Ti 4200 with 128MB ram.
My laptop is AMD64 and has an ATI 200x pcie integrated card and I have no 3D acceleration. I have spent many hours trying to find the right combination of settings. I have read all the forum on the Ati drivers and for some reason I still can't get mine to work correctly.
Your choice of Ati card might not have the same problems as mine. But even if the NVidia drivers are still a little buggy, it seems that NVidia is at least activly working on linux drivers.
It seems that Ati only does something after a million people finally complain and they take their sweet time doing it. They semm to have picked up the pace more recently but I still can't get 3D acceleratioin to work in Xwindows. If I enable dri I get a blank screen and have to hard boot my laptop.
You said sound wasn't important but I have had no problems with my NForce 3 motherboad. But then NVidia's Documentation says that it is based on oss. I spent many hours pouring of post and guides and finally I had to emerge alsa-driver with USE=oss and then emerge alsa-oss. With NVidia I can compile my kernel with built-in support or as modules or using thier closed source drivers. Non of my Ati has worked well with anything.
But I have always been an NVidia fan. Their drivers and interface have always been logical and eaiser for me to use.
Besides one company will pull a head for a while but then the other catches up. So for me it's kind of brand loyalty. |

Thanks, I was leaning that way anyway, just needed a little push.
The 6100 is a pretty new chipset anyway, so drivers shoudl be here soon. *crosses fingers* _________________ Cam

I prefer the TForce 6100 by biostar. Reminds me a lot of DFI. _________________ CPU: 3800+ X2 (2.5Ghz)

Finally I decided to buy a AMD-939 instead of 754 (maybe I upgrade the processor in the future)
It is an AMD3200+ with a ASUS A8N-VM CSM motherboard.
It uses the NVIDIA GeForce 6150 + nForce 430.
Video works without problems with nvidia drivers 1.0.8178.
On my P4 laptop I have also a NVIDIA video chipset, I have never had any problems with it. |

I have the following running smoothly:
Motherboard GA-K8N51GMF-9
AMD Athlon64 X2 3800
1GB (512 x 2) DDR400 memory
80GB PATA HD
(USB CDROM)
the video GeForce 6100 and Gb LAN are built into the motherboard
(note I had problems with install using SATA, replaced with PATA. Issue was only with Genoo 2005.1 R1, but Ubuntu and SuSE worked well). I'm not running X, so the video performance is not an issue for me. |
