anyone using the dell 3100cn laser printer?
I am considering buying this printer. The reviews for this unit are fantastic. Dell supports linux with this printer and I even called them to confirm. I can not find anything anywhere on how this is accomplished. The Dell guy I talked to says they provide a CD with drivers. Would this be a cups driver or something else?
Any thoughts? |

Hi again,
Finally received my 3100cn today, all I can say is wow!! The print quality is even better than the reviews give it credit for. Very easy to setup, rpm2targz the rh provided rpm from the Dell CD and stick the cups ppd file into /usr/share/cups/model, restart cupsd and you are set. |

Ditto exactly.
After reading all the reviews, I knew an ink-jet with high glossy paper could do better, but after printing some color pictures, I was really impressed. The quality on plain paper was remarkable.
How long does it take for your printing to start when printing a large color picture?
If I view the picture in konqueror and print, it takes a few minutes of processing (on printer) before printing.
If I print the same picture from Gimp in starts in like 10 seconds. Strange. (I have the max amount of memory 576MB) |

postscript issues can cause this, like too much information too the printer. |

I still think maybe the PS is being sent through ghostscript because it is slower than the PS driver in Windows.
(I'll investigate and if it is doing that it will be an easy fix.)
The only qualm I have is the output is slightly rotated clockwise about 2 degrees.
I was reading the support forums at dell and it seems this is a common issue and some were able to fix this, and others had no luck.
If it can't be resolved, as good as the output is, this printer is going back. |
