I've got an integrated AC'97 card and a PCI SB Live! 5.1.

The problem is that the system chooses AC'97 by default and I don't want to!

How could I set SB Live! 5.1 default?

Thanx a lot!!

Are you able to deactivate the onboard sound in your BIOS setup?

You may have to. I know in one system I worked with the sound card wouldnt work at all unless the on board one was disabled.

follow the ALSA guide so that your sound card support is built as modules. when you have followed that, look in /etc/modules.d/alsa
you'll see where it assigns one to snd-slot-0 and snd-card-0 and the other to snd-slot-1 and snd-card-1
0 is always the default, swap them around so that you get the desired configuration
