Hello,
I hope someone can help me out here.
I get the following when I run net.eth1 start.

* Loading networking modules for eth1
* modules: iwconfig essidnet iptunnel ifconfig dhcpcd apipa
* iwconfig provides wireless
* ifconfig provides interface
* dhcpcd provides dhcp
* Bringing up eth1
* Configuration not set for eth1 - assuming dhcp
* dhcp
* eth1 does not exist

I'm using an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 BG card and lspci says so too.
The module I'm using "ipw2200" loads fine.
Where should I look?

Hi,
Please post the contents of your /etc/conf.d/net.eth1. Also check to see if you have cleared up all the ._cfg000 files in the /etc directory. What baselayout version are you using? Does the ipw2200 module load correctly? Type dmesg after manually loading ipw2200 and see if there are any errors.
The symptoms suggest that there are some ._cfg000 files pending in the /etc/conf.d directory.

I don't have a /etc/conf.d/net.eth1, but here are the contents of my /etc/conf.d/net:

As for the module, it didn't load correctly. I got the following:

Great....so now we know the problem is with the ipw2200 module/firmware. Fine. Now tell me the following please:
1. Versions of ipw2200, ipw2200-firmware, ieee80211
2. Versions of kernel, baselayout and udev.
The error "ipw-2.2-boot.fw load failed: Reason -2" is quite common on this forum. Search for it

Kernel : 2.6.14-gentoo-r2
udev: 0.70-r1
As for the modules, I don't know how to check their versions? |

The versions can be checked with the following command:

emerge -pv ieee80211
|
This will show you the installed and available versions of ieee80211.
I suggest you upgrade to baselayout 1.11.14 and udev 077-r5. The woking versions on my machine are:
1. udev 077-r5
2. baselayout 1.11.14
3. kernel 2.6.14 (but r2 should be ok too)
4. hotplug 20040923-r1
5. ieee80211 1.1.6
6. ipw2200 1.0.8-r1
7. ipw2200-firmware 2.4
Mark you thread as UNSOLVED (change the subject line of your first post). Did you check out other threads with similar errors ?

There are a few other posts with the same issue. I tried most of them so far, but unfortunately they all suggest the same solutions which don't seem to work for me. This one seems to sum it up quite well, https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-403995-highlight-ipw2200+firmware.html
Also, I changed all of my versions to match yours but it did not work.
I also tried building ipw2200 in the kernel and used both ipw2200-firmware 2.4 and 2.2 but neither worked.

The solution was to have /sbin/hotplug in /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug instead of /sbin/udev or something.
