I have this problem (on a new install) however never ran bash 3.1 I'm only at 3.0-r14 and have re-emerged both baselayout and bash still no joy.
Any suggestions? |

If they have the disk space, right before any -uD system or world procedure perhaps all those running ~x86 systems would be wise to run a one line bash script like:
quickpkg bash gcc glibc binutils
(adding anything else they deem important).
Then after all checks out OK and after a reboot, delete all the binaries created by quickpkg.

down reved bash, baselayout and net-tools to stable versions and now net.lo seems to init fine but eth0 times out waiting for valid dhcp server.
which is strange as it uses dhcp fine on the livecd as well as every other box I have.
will give it an ip to use and see if that helps |

Yea, new baselayout fixed everythin but the loopback, which I figured out after a bit of ignorance. (still went back to 3.0)

If you search the forum for a script called "emwrap" and change your ACCEPT_KEYWORDS to x86 it will sanely and safely downgrade you to x86. If your in no hurry and everything it working fine you could even just rebuild the tool chain and let updates in x86 take care of the rest, dont know how good an idea that is though. |

| I am a new Gentoo user and this is my very first install. After finishing my install and rebooting I came up with this error. I have tried manually bringing up my ethernet but dhclient was not found. If I supply an IP address I can ping the router but dns isn't working. My resolv.conf has the router's ip in it. My bash version is 3.00.16(1)-release. I'm not sure where to go from here to get my network working. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I just rebooted my system today, and my net scripts are also messed up. I'm using bash-3.1-r2 also... Here is my error...

Is this due to the new bash or something else?

Had the same problem after updating baselayout, because I forgot to etc-update. |

The -r2 doesn't work for me when it comes to emerging dev-lang/tcl.
Came across this post after a couple of days of stressing with my make.conf...
Cheers guys - downgrading worked and STUPID  me for not thinking of bash.
Using RR4 2.6.5 with initng, uclibc (no glibc), gcc4.0.2, x11-7, reiser4 and lookingGlass3D all with ~x86 (basically asking for trouble).
Everything else is ok - just dev-lang/tcl didn't like it until bash-3.0-r14 downgrade. |

seems it breaks all packages with configure-scripts that using this function (example =dev-tcltk/thread-2.6.1), downgrading bash again solved the problem....

I'm a ~x86 user myself, I usually don't have problems, didn't even notice problem with bash due to not rebooting my system ( I update daily ) =].
Anyways, I wanted to just mention that I see quiet a few people still using etc-update. I'm personally a fan of dispatch-conf with the following /etc/dispatch-conf.conf settings ( make sure to emerge colordiff if you're going to be using colordiff in the config!):

The option ( replace-unmodified=yes ) to replace configs that have not been modified makes upding even easier.
Just felt that I should share since dispatch-conf is a lot nicer than etc-update =]

| Managed an emerge -e world x2 with 4267 packages on a test machine using _p5 release - no probs (beyond the fact all the daemons take an age to load - time to get back to writing initng scripts). |
