i have a computer with amd sp 2200+ ,a7n8x (nforce2 ethernet and audio intergrated),nv440 ,
i emerge my gentoo yestoday using gentoo install-2005.1-minimal -x386-iso(stage1) using vmware ,and install it on my harddisk.every thing goes well but after reboot ,there sounds some problum,my ethernet-card doesn't work .
when starting i reseived these messeges:
starting lo
no interface module has been loaded
*************
starting eth0
dhcpcd:missing required fuction interface-is-up
error :problem starting needed services
"netmount" was not started
something more :
when login, ifconfig doesn't work! so can't see what happened. |

dont know about the first problem but i do know that ifconfig wont work if your not root ![Very Happy :-D](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

Hello there.
I use the same mobo and i saw the same problem enough times to understand that it is
a kernel module problem.
Search carefully your kernel configuration and load all the important modules.
Nforce2 + 3Com Ethe ....
I use them 4 sure ... |

Could also be vmware.
I go with G on this. Check the modules carefuly.
Since it's your first install, I suggest you first try to do a stage 3 install instead of stage 1, and use genkernel to generate your kernel.
This is more easy. When you get the hang of it go about configuring and exploring on your own.
When I started with linux almost 2 years ago now I did it the same way and it worked wonderful.

Edit: Commands to figure out the types of hardware you have are lspci and dmesg. To examine dmesg output you can do: dmesg > a && nano -w a
Use these commands in a second terminal (alt+f2, alt+f1 to go back to the first terminal) |

wild guess, are you using bash-3.1? if so try to downgrade to bash-3.0-r14 _________________ please add [SOLVED] to the topic if you found the answer |
