Ok, I finally got everything, well almost everything working right. I must have recompiled my kerenel a billion times just today :). I still have no sound. I compiled my sound drivers into the kernel. It is the VIA sound drivers. They are onboard with my epox mobo. I compiled them and OSS into the kernel. I still got no sound. I don't know what tests to run or anything. I just know that I have no sound in gaim. Any help would be great.

I know I'm impatient, I get told that every day. Is there someone out there that can help me? I got no sound. I get an error when I try to play mp3s. It recognizes that my sound is not setup. Here is what I have done so far. I compiled in sound card support and support for the via sound card. I have onboard audio on an epox mobo. I also compiled in (to the kernel) oss support. Help please! I just want my sound to work!!!

can you get sound if you run it as root? ...if so, you've probably forgot to add yourself to the audio and wheel group (edit /etc/group) :D

I have only been running it as root. I haven't even set my other users up to use x yet. I am still trying to get everything to work before I do that. So no I am root right now and I don't have sound.

hmmm ...did you compile the sound into the kernel or as a module? ...btw, are you sure you used the right driver? did you try running sound as a normal user (mp3blaster is in the portage, works in console and is pretty easy to use)? - sometimes (dunno why!) the root cannot play sound, i've seen such an error before :?

No, I have not done in tests in console, and no I'm not sure if I'm using the right driver. I know that it should be ALC650 or ALC201A. I wasn't sure so for testing purposes I am testing different sound drivers to see if that is my problem. I have a hunch that it is. I am compiling them into the kernel, not as modules.

I tried compiling all the sound drivers into the kernel at the same time and still have no sound. Don't know..that might have caused a conflict. I don't know what to do to get my sound to work...any help would be great please!

You say that it's a VIA motherboard, right?
The you should use via82cxxx. Try compiling it as a module.

Oh, and conflicts don't occur on Linux... ;)

Have you tried the ALSA-drivers ?? They work very well here (C-Media 8738 MC-6, module cmipci) and on a friend`s PC (VIA Onboardsound, module via82xx).

It`s quite easy to install.
1.Remove all sounddrivers from your kernel, except of "soundcore", the soundsupport option...

2.Compile the kernel/install it

3.Reboot

4.env ALSA_CARDS="abcd" emerge alsa-driver
Replace "abcd" with the corresponding modulename for your soundcard, get it here: http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/

5.Setup /etc/modules.d/alsa, it`s simple, replace the given names with the ones of your soundmodules

6.rc-update add alsasound boot

7.Unmute your soundcard with alsamixer (console) or alsamixergui (X) from the alsa-utils-ebuild.

8.Try mp3blaster or mpg123 if it works..

Greetings
