is there anyway to get the shortcut key for volume control (on the keyboard) to set the volume for any other track besides 'Master' ? or to maybe bind Master to PCM, or Headphone ?

I dont know if it uses master or PCM but I use BMP (beep-media-player) with plugin (dont know the exact name but it is on BMP homepage in section plugins) to use some keys from my multimedia keyboard,, It works great and there are also some other keys to set up like internet browser, mail client, mute, homepage, etc.... you just need to run BMP, but if you listen to music a lot so its not a problem:)

I think that this plugin has also xmms,, and think you shuld set in the player which volume control you use(master,PCM,....) but didnt try that, coz no need for it...

To be honest, I was going to ask exactly the same question! But I'll rephrase it in order to get a better solution maybe.

My problem is that in Gnome I cannot use "Master Volume" slider to control the sound level. Instead, the "PCM" slider does this. While gnome-volume-control can be told which channel it controls (like PCM instead of Master), this is semi-optimal solution.

I can, of course, go to the system "Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts" window and bind the keys I want to the sound events (increase/decrease volume level), but this way only the "Master Volume" channel can be controlled. So, even if I can actually see on the screen a visual feedback that the volume level is changing (Master), in reality it stays the same (PCM). :(

I think that the problem is with my alsa configuration (albeit it looks pretty sane IMO). OTOH maybe this is connected to the fact that I have an OSS compatibility turned on, and I can switch between "Realtek ALC203 rev 0 (OSS Mixer)" and "SiS SI7012 (Alsa Mixer)" devices.

Please, hint me how can I control properly the volume level using "Master Volume"?

Hmm. And your answer, while completely valid, doesn't address the right issue IMHO. :?

Ok guys here we go, take a sit & a coffee...

Goto Keyboard shortcut AND BE SURE TO DISABLE Volume up & down keys (it's important)
Do that with backspace key to remove them

Next:
Code:
gconf-editor

Goto key
Code:
/apps/metacity/global_keybindings

Set
Code:
run_command_1 to XF86AudioRaiseVolume
run_command_2 to XF86AudioLowerVolume

then
Goto key
Code:
/apps/metacity/keybinding_commands

Set
Code:
command_1 amixer -q set PCM 2+ unmute
command_2 amixer -q set PCM 2- unmute

Now if everyone follow clearly what happen:
XF86Audio are reassign to run command 1 & 2
run command 1 & 2 will ask amixer to increase or decrease the PCM channel by 2

All you have to do is replace PCM with the channel you wish handle.
(well you will also need amixer of course)

Enjoy

That's clever! :)
Score +1

Although I've recently found that the Headphone channel controls the volume level too... And the Main channel still does nothing. I suppose this might be a problem with alsa drivers. I have a SiS sound chipset - and autodetection uses intel8x0 kernel module for it. Mabye it's time for checking the sources again...? :?

I'd say that the real problem was connected to the trouble with ALSA drivers.

I've issued two bug reports in ALSA bug tracking system:
* https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1510
* https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1599

The solution is twofold:
* upgrade to the newest kernel, like gentoo-sources-2.6.15
* use standalone alsa drivers, like alsa-driver-1.0.10 or better

This worked for me fine. :D

If it helps you as well, please add "[solved]" to the topic of this thread.

krinn, Im still not sure how this works.
After that are we supposed to set the key on it through the Keyboard Shortcuts?

I have a problem of not being able to change volumes.
I have a apple keyboard and from the looks of things through the Keyboard Shortcuts 0xae and 0xb0 are supposed to change volumes but it doesn't.

And when I change the command for the screenshots it works.

My original problem was that the master channel wasn't doing anything - and that was solved by upgrading alsa drivers.

IIRC the shortcuts should be set anyway. You can also play with trying different keyboard layouts, too.
For example, even if in Gnome the shortcuts were working, in KDE I always needed to select a "Microsoft Natural Keyboard" layout to get them working (even if the keyboard itself is not the MS one - it's Labtec Internet Keyboard).
