|
|
I don't very oftain but, i've googled... I've searched.... i cant find anything about this problem...
I'm useing a ITE IT8212F ATA133 RAID Controller pci card with the it821x driver that comes with the 2.6.15 kernel. I've tried with the driver built in or compiled as a module.... same result.
The problem is whenever a large amount of data is copyed off the drive (through samba) the drive apears to crash.
Code: | end_request: I/O error, dev hde, sector 237797447
end_request: I/O error, dev hde, sector 237797447
end_request: I/O error, dev hde, sector 237797447
end_request: I/O error, dev hde, sector 237797447
end_request: I/O error, dev hde, sector 237797447 |
ect.
After that the device is read only and "busy" and in order to restore the drive to propper functionality I have to reboot the server.
Does anyone know anything about this? any suggestions? hints? Please help if you can.
Thanks!
~Rman77
Edit: I'm useing the card in Raid1 mode FYI

hmmm, i use that controller in pass-through mode without a glitch.
is it always at the same sector when that error occurs? _________________ http://proaudio.tuxfamily.org/wiki - pro-audio software overlay

After a little more log digging and a peek at the driver code I finally found the problem.
Code: | Jan 23 20:00:55 kserver hde: task_in_intr: status=0xd0 { Busy }
Jan 23 20:00:55 kserver ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Jan 23 20:00:55 kserver ide2: reset: master: ECC circuitry error
Jan 23 20:01:05 kserver hde: irq timeout: status=0x80 { Busy }
Jan 23 20:01:05 kserver ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Jan 23 20:01:05 kserver ide2: reset: master: ECC circuitry error
Jan 23 20:01:05 kserver end_request: I/O error, dev hde, sector 237611662
Jan 23 20:01:05 kserver end_request: I/O error, dev hde, sector 234360935

The above code led me to believe it was a dma problem and looking in the driver comments pretty much confirmed it.
The card apears to have buggy firmware which isn't used in passthrough mode. In order for the card to work with the latest firmware you must use
Code: | hdparm -d1 /dev/hdX |
Now its cookin
@gimpel: thanks for the responce, I was originally only looking at it being a driver issue, your post made me think otherwise

Which firmware version is on your controller? I have used ITE IT8212F in my gentoo samba server and never had these IO erros (or any other errors for that matter). My version is 1.4.x.x (don't remember exactly).
I know that ITE has published many updates to the firmware. I can't flash it, because my controller has PROM chip, not Flash nor EEPROM (them cheap bastards ). I don't use IT8212F at the moment, I had to install wi-fi card, and because my server has no more PCI slots (mATX), I decided to go for in-kernel RAID on regular IDE interface. |

My card has bios version 1.7.1.94 which also happens to be the latest version from ite, so its a good thing you cant upgrade

rman77: nice you found the problem.
dma probs should have been my first guess too, as the only prob i have with it is to get it in UDMA mode, or it's just hdparm displaying incorrectly, dunno. _________________ http://proaudio.tuxfamily.org/wiki - pro-audio software overlay
