Hello, I'm having troubles getting my mouse wheel to work. I've tried many different configurations but no luck. I'm under the understanding my current config should work based on the research I've done. But I must be missing something...

In the "Mouse1" part of your InputDevice Section, try adding the line:
Code: | Option "Buttons" "5" |
This tells xorg that your mouse has five buttons: left-click, right-click, middle-click, wheel-up and wheel-down. |

You can also try to open xev and to scroll your wheel in order to see the code associated with it (that's the code you would have to put in xorg.conf) _________________ Oops, I think I'm not DOS compatible

No luck with "Buttons" "5"
I have also opened xev, although I get no data when scrolling the wheel, only when moving and clicking.
If it matter this is a USB mouse, is it possible it's conflicting with the touchpad on the laptop?
Any other ideas ?
Thank you.
Here is my current xorg now.

You mis-typed. It should be
Code: | Option "Buttons" "5" |
not
Code: | Options "Buttons" "5" |

Hmm...
Try adding the line
Code: | Option "SendCoreEvents" "true" |
to the same section. |

Same configuration, but no problem at all (my mouse is a Logitech Optical Mouse and my touchpad a Synpatics)

Oops, i forgot to say that the /dev/psaux for my touchpad (Mouse1) must be built into the kernel (Device Drivers -> Input Device Support -> [*] Provide legacy /dev/psaux device)
(BTW, i use the gentoo-sources-2.6.15-r1 and xorg-x11-6.8.2-r6) _________________ Oops, I think I'm not DOS compatible

This is getting frustrating... I still cannot get this wheel to scroll.
I have booted from a Knoppix CD and the scroll whell works fine there so that eliminates any hardware issues.
xorg-x11 6.8.2-r4 and
2.6.12-r10 kernel
Is there anything else I can check? |

Well, it's working now. Unfortuanly I'll never know what was wrong. My hard drive puked out on me so I had to rebuild from scratch on a new drive.
Maybe it was the kernel
Code: |
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Kernel 2.6.15-gentoo-r1

My experience has been that the "magic word" is, or should be, "ZAxisMapping."
From other posts, I notice that the xmodmap terminal-command (put in the startup-file of your X-session) can also be used for this and more.
On my systems, Protocol option can be "Auto" although in the past it was "IMPS/2." It may, of course, depend upon exactly what model of mouse you've plugged in: Linux can tell the exact model of the mouse.
Things are considerably easier with the 2.6 kernel, which simply maps my laptop's touchpad and USB-mouse into one, convenient, "/dev/input/mice." No more "SendCoreEvents" nonsense. |
