Why don't you install it through the ebuild? |

That will fail if the destination directory (/usr/local/games/quake4/q4base/) does not exist.
Use the ebuild. Give us meaningful error messages. "It won't work, bleaargh!" is of no help. |

m1key ~ # mount /mnt/cdrom
mount: special device /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 does not exist
what does that mean.?
i know my cd rom works.
but i dont see a ebuild for quake4. just the installer gui, for when i have copied over the pk4 files. which is my whole problem. _________________ My POS computer: doing a full upgrade by may 5th from whats listed below

If you use the USE flag cdinstall, it will install the whole game for you. |

You can do it either way, but the second one means you don't have to load the module on startup. Personally, I prefer the second way, but that's just because I try to keep few parts of the kernel as modules. To use the ebuild with the cd install, type Code: | USE="cdinstall" emerge quake4-bin" |

which basically is a rather bad idea... you should rather do this (as root):
Code: | echo "games-fps/quake4-bin cdinstall" >> /etc/portage/package.use |
so that the ebuild will 'remember' the cdinstall useflag. if you just put it in front of the emerge command the useflag will be forgotten as soon as the emerge command is finished. |

here is my fstab. i think i dont have the cdroms right, sorry for my ignorance. not to mention im really hung over right now. lol.
Code: | # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# noatime turns off atimes for increased performance (atimes normally aren't
# needed; notail increases performance of ReiserFS (at the expense of storage
# efficiency). It's safe to drop the noatime options if you want and to
# switch between notail / tail freely.
#
# See the manpage fstab(5) for more information.
#
# <fs> <mountpoint> <type> <opts> <dump/pass>
# NOTE: If your BOOT partition is ReiserFS, add the notail option to opts.
/dev/hda1 /boot ext2 noauto,noatime 1 2
/dev/hda3 / ext3 noatime 0 1
/dev/hda2 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro 0 0
#/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto 0 0
# NOTE: The next line is critical for boot!
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# glibc 2.2 and above expects tmpfs to be mounted at /dev/shm for
# POSIX shared memory (shm_open, shm_unlink).
# (tmpfs is a dynamically expandable/shrinkable ramdisk, and will
# use almost no memory if not populated with files)
shm /dev/shm tmpfs nodev,nosuid,noexec 0 0
