I've got a standard Adaptec U320 PCI-X dual channgel scsi card, and two JBOD's running off it. Lots of seagate cheetah's in there, and I'm doing software raid at level 5. Running 2.6.8.1 vanilla, and the XFS filesystem. Using stock drivers on all hardware (Supermicro X5DAE mb with dual intel xeons). Right as I start slamming the raid I get this:

Sorry for the bump, but this is critical. I've just tried it with vanilla 2.6.6 as well, same thing. I've verified that all items are terminated correctly and such. Anyone have any ideas here? |

I have 3 servers with Adaptec/Seagate Hardware. Adaptec 3200S and 2010S controllers. 15K and 10K U320 Seagate drives (not mixed on a controller). Motherboards are Intel and SuperMicro. Processors are P4 and Xeons. Setting the SCSI channels to U320 mode on the 2010S controller has always causes problems for me. The arrays build slowly, and when they are finished they become unstable during format or during data R/W. Adaptec and Seagate both have firmware updates that apply to my products, however nothing has worked. Much money has been spent on cables and backplanes to try and pinpoint the problem. I have found that setting the 2010S channels to U160 mode has produced no problems thus far, and the arrays are stable after 1+ years. I realize my setup is different from yours in that I am using hardware array. However I believe that the problem is an incompatibility between Adaptec and Seagate U320 devices.
To make a long story short..... Try setting your controller to U160 mode and please reply with your results. Thanks and good luck. |

I've actually given up on this, and paid for an adaptec support contract. They're going to send a tech to fix this, too swamped with my cluster project at the moment...sigh....
I appreciate the info though, never really thought of lowering the speed. I'll let ya know what ends up fixing it. So far, I'm definitely NOT a fan of adaptec anything lol

Got 2010s from ebay recently and I just setup RAID5(st336607lc x4) and RAID0(seagate U160 x2) out of my SCSIs yesterday, so far kernel 2.6.15-r1 works for me. I am gonna get benchmark tool and see how it perform. |
