These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

I went ahead with it, but I'm curious what this is? |

to figure out what is pulling it. You can also mask it temporarily and then check what package will cry

Well, I've already emerged it... I guess I could remove it and re-emerge.
Doing an "equery depends virtual/perl-Test-Simple" returns nothing... |

So, obviously Locale-gettext needs Test-Simple (and if you look into /usr/portage/dev-perl/Locale-gettext/Locale-gettext-1.05.ebuild, you can see the dependency requirement >=perl-core/Test-Simple-0.54).
