Hi

I am following the standard install instructions, but when I get to step 11, and run

Code:
cd /usr/portage
scripts/bootstrap.sh

it runs for about 5 hours, then ends with the following error message:

Code:
checking how to run the C++ preprocessor... /lib/cpp
configure: error: C++ preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check

!!! ERROR: sys-libs/ncurses-5.3-r1 failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 273, Exitcode 1
!!! econf failed

I'm using stage1, CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu", CFLAGS="-mcpu=i686 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" and CXXFLAGS="-mcpu=i686 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer".

This happens every time - and this is my fifth attempt at a clean install. However, if I just ignore it, and continue, everything seems to work fine.

Is it a problem? How do I solve it?

Thanks for your help :)

Sebastian

Are you using the tarball from the install CD or are you downloading the latest one when you install? I was getting a similar error message when trying to use the tarball that was included on the CD. When I downloaded and used the newest stage 1 tarball my install went just fine.

daydreamer: I have had problems downloading ncurses during a 'emerge -u system'. It downloads a pile of other packages first, then breaks on ncurses (can't rememebr the error tho).

I found I could ignore the error and all seemed fine (I'm now installing X and KDE). Doing an 'emerge system' (without the '-u') after the bootstrap seemed to fix everything.

klarnox: I am using the stage tarball from the CD, so next time I install I'll download it instead. Thanks!

yet i managed to get it to work with the stage1 tarball
after the first emerge sync i did a emerge protage what seemed to do the trick.
oh, and it's also a good idea to set the timezone end time right (caused me some trouble :)

Hmmm i have changed the mobo and the cpu ( i got some spares from work, hehehe ) and strangely enough i didnt get any of the errors that occured before ... bootstrap went all ok and now my system is continuing from the stage 2 install .. while im at work .. everything looks fine so far.

Im have to say that even with all that bunch of errors ( which might be my own fault ) have a bright side, think about it ... i dont remember the last time that i had to spend 7days installing M$ XP. You just learn a whole lot more from a humble Gentoo install than you ever will from installing the M$ XP. Its like i pretty much remember the whole install procedure step by step. and all the conands and the varables hee hee ..

And its a little challange i guess ... more options to play around with ...
And finaly an OS that lest you chose the packages you want to install.
Now all i have to do is totaly convert to Linux ... and stick a little sticker on my box ... "SAy No T0 Micro$of+" ... Ahh so evil.

I cant wait to get the Gentoo running ... i want to get the CS running on it and see how well linux handles OpenGL ..

i hope it all goes well for you guys.
BTW i did use the stage1 tarball from the new rc4 live cd ( all 3 stage's )
but i dont really think that that was a problem ..
its just funny that after the mobo and cpu change it worked .. Hmmm
Hope it all goes well from now ...

See ya later Guys ...
and thanx for the reply
