Hi there,
All GTK2-apps look horrible (ugly fonts, no theme) under KDE (which I am very happy with), except for when I have just run gnome-control-center (which seems to hide my desktop).

In other words, except I run gnome-control-center, which seems to apply my GTK2-theme and the proper fonts, everything (e.g. Gaim and the Gimp) looks really. It feels like the UI-settings are only loaded when gnome-control-settings (or gnome, I presume) is loaded.

Here is a screenshot:
[img:7f56c8fc75]http://www.ulsnes.dk/simon/gimp.jpg[/img:7f56c8fc75]

Notice the e's in particular (missing AA'ing). Oh, and BTW, the fonts aren't just ugly because of the compression...

Try to link /usr/bin/gnome-settings-daemon in your KDE Autostart directory.

Yes, that does apply my settings... BUT it also fries kdesktop (i.e. kills it). Of course, I can restart kdesktop afterwards, but that is not a very elegant solution... ;)

I'll experiment a bit with my .xinitrc and such...

Try this:
Code:
emerge gtk-theme-switch
switch2

Hope this helps :)

Yeah, I higly recommend gtk-theme-switch as well, works great for me =) It allows you to change the theme as well as the fonts.

My fav. GTK2 theme is gtk-engines-mist (also named that in portage). Its a very neutral theme, fits in with the more elaborate KDE themes nicely. Give it a go :)

Thanks for your suggestions, although I solved the problem myself (with help from c07).

I just changed my .xinitrc to this:
Code:
gnome-settings-daemon &
xmodmap /etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap  # For my wacom tablet...
startkde

I'll try the gnome-theme-switch you mention, sounds tasty ;)...

It seems that this change works for those who do not run kdm or such. It works for me only if I start X by hand. I tried starting gnome-settings-daemon in Autostart, but as mentioned by Cossins, it kills kdesktop. Consequently, I added kdesktop command to follow the gnome-settings-daemon and that seems to work. However I was wondering if there is a less intrusive way? Possibly by changing ~/.font-config. Anybody?

Wow, those fonts look very very nice! What did you do to get them to look like that?

@Remenic
Try this:

emerge gtk-engines-geramik gtk-theme-switch
switch2
Select the Geramik-Theme --> Apply

Restart your GTK2 programs.. ;)

My question is (and admittedly, I'm not a GIMP master, so it could be something obvious)...how did you get all the tool icons in GIMP to be colorized? Mine are all greyscale... =\

emerge $PORT_DIR/media-gfx/gimp-1.3.14.ebuild

I used the "prebuilt" tag when building freetype... it emables the bytecode interpreter.

my fonts sucked horribly until that. now i am extemely happy with my fonts
