what does this mean? Code: | APIC error on CPU0: 40(40)
| and how do I fix it. I'm running a athlon64 in an x86 environment. 2.6.15-gentoo-r1 kernel. _________________ I don't hang out here anymore, try asking on http://unix.stackexchange.com/ if you want my help. |

Does your mainboard have SiS chipset? |

That looks like the same (at least similar, maybe a later revision) chipset that I (and others) have had numerous problems with, many of which are still unsolved to some extent.
I'm currently running this chipset on my local media/file server which has an uptime of about 15 days and out of the 20491 lines in /var/log/messages, 8571 consist of the message "APIC error on CPU0: 40(40)". Interestingly it doesn't seem to have a noticeable affect on performance; network seems to be stable, hdparm reports good read speeds, etc. I should mention that i'm booting with the "no_timer_check" kernel option, which (IIRC) was implemeted as a direct fix for the fast (double speed) clock problems which many people had (and I still do without this option enabled) with this chipset.
One worrying thing, however, is that there are 12 instances of the message "Losing some ticks... checking if CPU frequency changed." in the log, and 6 instances of the following:
Code: | warning: many lost ticks.
Your time source seems to be instable or some driver is hogging interupts
rip acpi_processor_idle+0x12e/0x380 |
So, i'm sorry I can't offer any solution to this but i'd be very interested if someone was to come up with any ideas for a fix. It has been a while since i've looked around for any updates on these issues (still running a 2.6.14 kernel) so I hope someone has got to the bottom of this.

I had 2 causes for losing ticks... one was a defect that required a bios update from HP. The second was AMD's PowerNOW in the kernel. by fixing both of those I fixed my losing tics and unstable time source. _________________ I don't hang out here anymore, try asking on http://unix.stackexchange.com/ if you want my help. |

I am having similar issue with my hp nx6125 laptop.
Can you, please, provide some more info, i.e.
a) what laptop do you have?
b) how did you fix PowerNOW in kernel?
Sincerely,
Gour |

Do you still, i.e. after removing Powernow from kernel, have ability to scale CPU freq

yeah you can do the cpu scaling with the other governors I believe I haven't played with it that much. But it won't do it on it won't do it on it's own by default, which is what powernow does. _________________ I don't hang out here anymore, try asking on http://unix.stackexchange.com/ if you want my help. |
