|
|
ok so the big headline on the GWN this week (MAY 15) was this big announcement coming at E3, but they gave no hint of what itd be? Am i the only one who is curious as to what might be in store for gentoo?
possibilities:
1) announcement of the Microsoft-Gentoo development alliance
2) Larry the cow is pregnant, congratulations Larry. Hes gonna be a soccer player...He is. (EDIT: for those of you have not seen billy madisson, please ignore this item)
3) All gentoo users get priority screening of the new matrix (my personal favorite)
4) A girl actually downloaded and installed gentoo (yeah big news i know...i wonder if she's hot)
and yes, priority screening of the matrix IS more important than women, hence its selection as my favorite.
any other (possibly more serious) ideas?

5. The fabled 1.4 release is out ?
6. Merge with debian, quicker releases are expected
7. Announce plan for world domination
8. The Gentoo developers got laid - development halted |

Gentoo will become a major gaming platform, maybe with support for some console. The reason: it was in the E3 article. I'm just wondering which game or which console... and I hope there's "free" somewhere in the announcement |

OK, I've been digging.
The link from the newsletter says http://www.supercomputerinc.com/ which says see us at booth 2352.
So I go to the E3 site, and look at booth 2352. http://www.e3expo.com/current_exhibitors/pf_current_exhibitors.cfm
It says at that booth that it is the US army?!?
OK so I guess we are being ported to a "new" console. (The console of a tank maybe?)
Also for more interesting info, look at supercomputer's milestones (sdk for gaming platform on linux).... |

Python in Portage was just a try and a successful one: despite the fact that most of Gentoo users don't know Python they are excited of the distro.
Next, more rsiky, step to be annonunced on E3 will be going further in the direction Functional and Meta Programming:
Gentoo second release will use Scheme-based Linux kernel, while Portage will be upgared to exploit reflections of TUNES.
The main idea is: if Perl people (the majority in overall Linux community) can swallow Python-based Portage, then they can swallow Scheme in the kernel as well.

Most of the beta testers for America's Army linux client were gentooers. A coincidence! I think not.
On a more serious note, go check out the website of Super Computer Inc. like iplayfast suggested. There's some really interesting info. _________________ [size=9]We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars. |

The supercomputerinc.com site also has a logo "The Power behind America's Army" with logos for Supercomputer inc., AMD, Gentoo and a couple others.
Unless the Army (or someone else) is giving Gentoo some major donation, I'm not seeing much to get excited over. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

As far as I know, America's Army is a game that the US Army developed (though I have no idea who actually wrote the code). _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

The US Army actually developed the code themselves using the Unreal Engine. It is very realistic, designed for online gaming and free to download from the net from http://www.americasarmy.com/. It is also a blatant ruse to recruit more cannon fodder for the US Army, by encouraging people to think that war is a game; but it seems to have worked. A port of this game for Gentoo is a very easy and likely scenerio. After all Gentoo Linux is the future and the Army is always looking for it's future weapon's designers. _________________ ----

digging some more.
Went to the American's Army site and checked out their forums regarding anouncement of E3. http://www.americasarmy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=63279&forum=23&start=60
They didn't talk about gentoo, but what struct me is that the forum engine seems to be the same as Gentoo's. Instead of newbies aprentice etc, they have privates, sargents etc.
I don't know if there is a possible link here or not, but it struct me as too similar to be ignored. |

Both Doom3 and Half-life 2 will be shown in E3. Maybe one of those will run on gentoo? Or even both? |

America's Army finished their Linux port, it's going to be included in the next Gentoo LiveCD which will be announced at the same time. |
