|
|
Hi,
I have a LAN laid out like this:
Code: |
host1 host3 host5
| | |
gentoo-server/FW ---- switch1---------- switch2---------- switch3
| | |
host2 host4 host6
|
The switches are cheap edimax 5-port 100Mbit, most NICs are new and of the same brand. (Anyway, should not matter with a switch between them?)
The lan used to work fine, but after I came home after being away for the weekend it didn't. Research showed that host1 and host2 could connect to the internet (through the server) just fine, but all others couldn't anymore
I can ping host4 from host3, but not the server or any other hosts not on the same switch.
When I ping the server from host3, the traffic-LEDs on switch2 all blink (in ping rhythm) and the traffic LED on switch1 blinks only for the port connected to switch2. In other words: it seems the switches don't redistribute packets coming from another switch anymore.
The strangest is: AFAIK absolutely nothing has changed in the network since last time it worked
Any ideas _________________ Cheers

Try connecting 'Host3' to 'Switch1'. If it works, check the cable that links 'switch1' to 'switch2'. _________________ J'vous dis ciao !

Indeed that was the next I was going to try (tonight), but still it would seem strange that both cables (between switch1 and switch2 and between switch2 and switch3 would break down at the same time ) I.e. host3 also can't ping host5, with exactly the same behaviour as with host3 pinging server. _________________ Cheers

might host 3 require a DNS server located on the gentoo server to ping host5, assuming you didn't just use IPs? _________________ Where there's open source , there's a way. |

Unfortunately it's not that simple
I did use IP's (always), which are statically configured on every host btw. _________________ Cheers

Problem solved. You will never guess.
....
After putting the adapters of the switches on the same power-source it worked
I know the 220-AC net is flaky in this house, but this beats every expectation... Still the question is: WHY
Adaptor DC not flat enough => interference with data-signal? (need condensor?)
Or I might run a 12V DC line through the house?
I thought at least the adaptor or the switch should take care of equalising its power source? Guess that s what happens when using cheap stuff...
Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. _________________ Cheers
