I'm back! after some time!
Had problems with the computer, and school really made it almost impossible to come in here..
so...
i already installed gentoo.. configured X, and have kde. My graphics card is working fine (I think) and the atheros drivers you recommended are emerged (both madwifi-drivers and madwifi-tools)
however.. i have absolutely no idea on what to do now! =P
any special command to start the bloody wireless card?
I want internet! argh!!!!11!!one!

This is what I used to get going:
http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/FirstTimeHowTo
then after that look into running wpa_supplicant, it definately can make handling wireless connections a lot easier, there's a guide in the gentoo-wiki, but for now just get the wifi card working as per the newbie howto guide . _________________ The danger from computers is not that they will eventually get as smart as men, but that we will agree to meet them halfway. - Bernard Avishai

i'm having a problem with that Tekara..
i can't seem to have an iwconfig (command not found)
..
i just saw this wiki -> http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Wireless_Configuration_and_Startup#Configuration_using_iwconfig
and it says:
"There are currently two ways to configure wireless networking in Gentoo. The first way is by using the options documented in /etc/conf.d/wireless.example to setup a full configuration, which uses iwconfig (located in the "wireless-tools" ebuild). The wireless.example file is well documented and should list everything you need to get started, including information on setting up WEP. Be sure to check this file for variable changes/additions/removals for new versions!
and can i enable an ebuild?
(totally n00b... i know...) |

Sounds like you missed an option in your kernel configuration (or you said M instead of Y):
Device Drivers -> Network Device Support -> Wireless LAN (non-hamradio)-> Wireless LAN drivers (non-hamradio) & Wireless Extensions
CONFIG_NET_RADIO:
Support for wireless LANs and everything having to do with radio, but not with amateur radio or FM broadcasting.
Saying Y here also enables the Wireless Extensions (creates /proc/net/wireless and enables iwconfig access) _________________ The danger from computers is not that they will eventually get as smart as men, but that we will agree to meet them halfway. - Bernard Avishai

i just configured the kernel through "make menuconfig"
i am absolutely positive that the option Tekara refered has a "*" on it..
i compiled it.. and think that the system is using this kernel and not the previous one because:
-> had to reconfigure grub, and it is working...
-> my screen resolution changed (to a bigger one)
-> x.org now is extremely slow (which is obviously not good... but means that something changed)
problem is.. the system still doesn't recognise "iwconfig"
getting desperate! |
