Firstly I don't have telnet nor rlogin and I don't know what to emerge.
What is even more curious is that vi worked when I started with installation cd but
now it's not there anymore.
Sorry if this is very n00b - this is my third day of gentoo but common things in
linux I am so familiar with are just not there- otherwise this thing makes some serious fun... |

use: 'emerge -s appname_you_search' - this searches for matches of the supplied string in the portage tree
or 'emerge -S appname_description_you_search' - This matches the search string against the description field as well as the package name
See 'man emerge' for more options!
and there is http://www.gentoo-portage.com/ and other similar sites. |

You said you don't know what to emerge too. What things do you need/want?
EDIT: Oh... you did tell us what you need... *smacks self on forehead* _________________ last.fm

I think telnet is in the netkit-telnetd package.
Theres no reason of forcing everyone to compile program you might not need so those who want vi can just emerge it. Everyone's happy. What's on the CD has nothing to do with what you decide to put onto your harddrive. _________________ Seamos realistas, exijamos lo imposibile |

thx for the tips.
I got telnet where you said it would be but vi seems to be really bothersome to
find - after some google it seems that one would need to copy it and some libraries
from install cd before chroot!?!
I found quite a few clones from portage but not the real McCoy |

This gives you the vi command. Altough it's not the "original" vi it is the one used in Gentoo / Linux. |

vi is dead I think. vim was made to replace it. but it's still vi with some more features. _________________ I don't hang out here anymore, try asking on http://unix.stackexchange.com/ if you want my help. |
