I don't have letters in: KDE, Opera, Kadu
I have got letters in: Openoffice, gftp, scite

Sounds like there is something wrong with your install of Qt, could you give the USE flags you installed it with? (emerge qt -pv).

KDE 3.x doesn't use Qt4...

I have qt4 and KDE working

That is completely unrelated (xorg 7.1 rc1 btw)
Unless you're running kde4 svn, it's not that odd that things don't work with Qt4.

Yeah, I accidently found out the other day that QT 4.X has a compatibility layer with QT 3.X. KDE will actually run flawlessly with QT 4.X, or at least the newer versions of each.
