So have they done any good updates except adding support for new cards ? what about powerplay ? possible to use all powerplay states ? possible to select powerstate in xorg.conf yet ? |

has someone got an ati-drivers-extras ebuild for these new drivers?
Also what kernels have you had success with?
I've had issues with anything about 2.14.x so far but I want to upgrade my kernel because I want some of the newer features, but I need the ATI drivers to work.
Thanks for the ebuild worked fine with my Xgl setup _________________ Admiral Trigger Happy

I tried the -ignoreABI option as mentionned before and it seems to be the solution, as for me X is not crashing anymore but now, when the screen change, I can see my cursor and all, I can even move it, but my desktop is never loading so I have no window...
I tried to wait a very long time but after that, X only shut down by itself and nothing more...
An idea of what it can be ?
The only thing I could find in my Xorg.0.log that was looking suspicious is that message occuring in the middle of the log (so I may suppose it is ignored by X) :
Quote: |
(EE) AIGLX error: dlsym for __driCreateNewScreen_20050727 failed (/usr/lib/dri/\
fglrx_dri.so: undefined symbol: __driCreateNewScreen_20050727)
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering

I'm running them with 2.6.16 w/o problems. Had to apply the intermodule patch, though. |

Yeah about that patch I tried editing an ebuild in the past to add the patch but it didn't work, has anyone got an ebuild that works and the patch too.
Thanks, I really want to upgrade the kernel, but I'm not going back to no DRI or no Xgl _________________ Admiral Trigger Happy

well, try (from the prompt, without xdm):
Code: |
startx -- -ignoreABI
|
however, for me it is still not the solution: X starts fine, but whenever i try to load
an application requiring opengl, i get a kernel oops.
i tried to track it down using kdump and gdb, and the problem seems to be coming from
the interrupt handler of the driver. did anyone else notice such a problem???
b.t.w, if i use an older version of the driver (say, 8.23.7) X starts fine, and i can use opengl, but everything is 10 times slower than the open source drivers; but no oops
no solution for me so far... |

Hi guys,
I've serious throubles installing ati-drivers on my a6ja laptop.
I emerged x11-drivers/ati-drivers 8.24.8, on a sys-kernel/vanilla-sources 2.6.16_rc6.
It compiled with no errors, and I can load the fglrx modules:
modinfo fglrx
Code: |
ilename: /lib/modules/2.6.16-rc6/video/fglrx.ko
author: Fire GL - ATI Research GmbH, Germany
description: ATI Fire GL
license: Proprietary. (C) 2002 - ATI Technologies, Starnberg, GERMANY
vermagic: 2.6.16-rc6 SMP preempt PENTIUMM gcc-3.4
depends: agpgart
parm: firegl:s
|
I have adjusted the xorg.conf file accordingly with the command
aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf, and here is the result:

olger901 wrote: | Hi all,
I saw that the new ati-drivers were released and add support for the Ati Radeon X1k cards (Though I am a nvidia card owner and a nvidia videocard fan, I tought I'd help the poor ati users on the board ) but that no ebuild is available yet. Thats why I created an unofficial ebuild for the drivers.
Note: that this ebuild is created quickly, and I have been unable to test it yet because I am not at home and do not have access to a linux machine at the moment, so it might not work.
1 Grab the ebuild here: http://www.linux4dummies.org/ati-drivers-8.24.8.ebuild
2 Put the ebuild in: /usr/portage/x11-drivers/ati-drivers
3 Run: ebuild /usr/portage/x11-drivers/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-8.24.8.ebuild digest
4 Allow the unstable drivers to be installed using ACCEPT_KEYWORDS or by editing your package.keywords
[EDIT]
5 Go to ati's website, download the drivers and put them in /usr/portage/distfiles
[/EDIT]
6 Emerge the ati-drivers |
Thank you very much for the ebuild, now I can run XGL without kernel panics |

I have the same problem though. When using -ignoreABi it seems that every time I try to start an application using opengl, xorg is greeting me with a beautiful kernel panic !
So sad ^^ ! |

Either I'm blind or there's no x86_64 driver to download from the ATI website.
Oh. Sorry. I was blind. :-[ _________________ ----------------------------------------------------------

The emerge doesn't work for me:
Code: |
# emerge ati-drivers

I've serious throubles installing ati-drivers on my a6ja laptop.
I emerged x11-drivers/ati-drivers 8.24.8, on a sys-kernel/vanilla-sources 2.6.16_rc6.
It compiled with no errors, and I can load the fglrx modules:
modinfo fglrx

I have adjusted the xorg.conf file accordingly with the command
aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf, and here is the result:

# NOTE: This is a NEW IMPROVED version of XF86Config-fbdev that uses the vesa
# driver instead of the fbdev driver. Thanks to Kenneth Fanyo who pointed
# this out to me. :)
# This XF86Config file is designed for use with the VESA framebuffer.
# This generic interface should work with nearly all video cards
# (although not every card will support every resolution).
# With the new driver, it should no longer be required to have frame buffer
# support in the kernel, or to run it on the console.
#
# Enjoy! :)

Many thanks for any idea!

Its not loading the fglrx driver, it says this in your log file.
Code: | (II) LoadModule: "fglrx"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module fglrx
(II) UnloadModule: "fglrx"
(EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (module does not exist, 0) |
I suspect the module has been placed somewhere outside the expected places for Xorg to load from _________________ Admiral Trigger Happy

As anybody some news about the kernel panic's problem when starting an application using opengl and using the -ignoreABI option ? I would be glad to have my desktop manager to work because it is always not. Thanks a lot for your help tough, I'm relieved to be able to load xfce even if there is some problem with colours to fix and that annoying thing about opengl ^^ ! |

no news here.. i get a nice stack dump, but i cant make anything from it.
As i have saide, it seems like something is wrong in the interrupt handler, which
passes a NULL pointer to the __wake_up function (iirc). However, since the interrupt
handler is part of the binary blob, and i currently dont have the time to start reading the
assembly, i cant make any more progress.
im just going to wait till ati release a version compatible with newer X versions.
untill then, no ati acceleration for me (and maybe never, if i can manage to undervolt the card correctly.) |

I doublt ATI's going to compile a version of its drivers for modular X for a long time. I would rather prefer that someone find a good solution about it. Thanks a lot for the time you spend trying to solve the problem !
If someone find out a solution, I would be glad to have it. I'm gonna look for a solution too on my side and post thre if I can find something. |

I am using this driver with Modular X and Xgl, it doesn't work with the latest Xorg, and nor does the Nvidia driver because something major was changed in xorg breaking the driver support, so ATI and Nvidia have to fix it thats the problem with closed source drivers they take longer to get updated.
Why can't they just opensource their drivers already, it won't give the other guy any advantage (unles one has been secretly stealing code from the other or something like that) considering Nvidias drivers are better in Windows and Linux (probably on mac too but I don't have one) _________________ Admiral Trigger Happy

I got the 8.24.8 working (using xorg-x11-6.8.2-r6 ), but I can't get overlay/xv-output working. 3D accerleration seems to work (all the nice screensavers work at a reasonable speed)
Code: | Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Graphics Adapter 0"
Driver "fglrx"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
# Option "no_accel" "no"
# Option "no_dri" "no"
# Option "mtrr" "off"
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "off"
EndSection |
This is the section from my xorg.conf
xvinfo gives this:
Code: | flintz@tresor ~ $ xvinfo
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
no adaptors present
|
Strangely the driver doesn't seem to recognize the exact card-model as it states only a "Generic":
Code: |
flintz@tresor ~ $ /opt/ati/bin/fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5755 (8.24.8)
|
Any ideas? The graphics card is pretty new, a ATI X1300 but the 8.24.8 is supposed to support it, am I right?
Or could it be the version of xorg being too old? But I thought 6.8 is supported by this driver. |

The problem is I don't know where to search for it...
I mean, if the driver compiles without error why we have to expect it places drivers in strange locations?
Any suggestion about?

I found out why XV doesn't work for me:
Code: | (WW) fglrx (0): XVideo not supported on versions of X pre X.Org 6.9 for AVIVO based graphics cards. |
So, is it worth the hassle of upgrading to X.org 7.0 ? Is the new version already stable and usable?
EDIT: Would X.org 6.9 be a solution? I read that the new driver has problems with the modular X? |

one quick question by the way: is this driver able to render correctly when using antialiasing within Xgl? with the current official ebuilds version you get a crappy screen as long as the desktop "stands still" and when moving some 3d object (rotating the cube and things like that [compiz]) it gets okay for a few seconds, but then falls back to a crappy screen. |

why that? it is an v5200 mobility an it is the same chip like the x1600 mobility.
anyone an idea?
i will install it on my new ibm t60p.
the problem was discused in that mac os on ibm thinkpad forum. you have to add the hardware id of your v5200 in the ati driver. but where is that unter linux? i can not find the position.

You should add this line to xorg.conf in the "device" section:
I did it and it worked though 3d acceleration is not running as fast as I expected.
BTW I am running Ubuntu on my laptop.
Please give me feedback and let me now if it worked for you and if you are satisfied withit.

The ati-driver is already in the portage tree, but I can't emerge ati-driver 8.24.8. package.keywords contains: Code: | x11-drivers/ati-drivers ~x86 |
Code: | gentoo thomas # emerge -p ati-drivers
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
