|

Emerge is refusing to work for xorg-x11. It's working for everything else that I try, but for xorg-x11, what I get is this:
Code: | shb-desktop / # emerge -av xorg-x11
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r7 (-3dfx) (-3dnow) +bitmap-fonts -cjk -debug -dlloader -dmx -doc -font-server -insecure-drivers +ipv6 -minimal (-mmx) -nls -nocxx +opengl +pam -sdk (-sse) -static +truetype-fonts +type1-fonts (-uclibc) -xprint* -xv* 0 kB
Total size of downloads: 0 kB
Do you want me to merge these packages? [Yes/No]

I thought maybe there was something wrong with X11R6.8.2-src.tar.bz2, so I deleted it. Emerge re-downloaded it and now we're back at the same problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Xorg will take a long time to unpack, but to just get a bash prompt without any kind of error printed is not like portage.
Have you got portage configured to record logs? If so maybe there is more info there. Also try emerging a different version of xorg to see if it still does the same. You can always kill it before it finishes if you don't want it to. _________________ Brian

Thanks for the replies.
A simple 'emerge xorg-x11' does the exact same thing.
And yeah, there's no error messages. For logs, there is a /var/log/emerge.log, but it isn't very helpful. Here's what the last part of it says: Code: | shb-desktop / # tail /var/log/emerge.log
1147655858: ::: completed emerge (1 of 1) mail-client/mozilla-thunderbird-1.5.0.2-r1 to /
1147655858: *** Finished. Cleaning up...
1147655862: *** exiting successfully.
1147655862: *** terminating.
1147658751: Started emerge on: May 14, 2006 21:05:51
1147658751: *** emerge xorg-x11
1147658751: >>> emerge (1 of 1) x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r7 to /
1147658751: === (1 of 1) Cleaning (x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r7::/usr/portage/x11-base/xorg-x11/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r7.ebuild)
1147658752: === (1 of 1) Compiling/Merging (x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r7::/usr/portage/x11-base/xorg-x11/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r7.ebuild)

I've also got some xorg-x11 logs in /var/log/portage, but it's all just compiler output. The logs that were created for these failed attempts are empty files.
Unfortunately, there aren't any other versions of xorg in portage except 7.0 and its betas, and I can't emerge those unless I clean out 6.8.
Is there something I should be looking for in the last successful xorg-x11 log? Or is there something I can do to try to isolate the problem (tell emerge to bypass the md5, or something like that)?
Thanks. |

Fixed it. The problem was in incompatible USE flags. I upgraded portage to 2.1 (in ~amd64), and it gave me this:
Code: | shb-desktop shb # emerge -av xorg-x11
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies ... done!
[ebuild R ] x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r7 USE="bitmap-fonts ipv6 opengl pam truetype-fonts type1-fonts -cjk -debug -dlloader -dmx -doc -font-server -insecure-drivers -minimal -nls -nocxx -sdk -static -xprint* -xv*" 0 kB
Total size of downloads: 0 kB
Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No]

So I went to https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=76936, and sure enough, if you've got the opengl flag, then you need to get the xv flag too. x11-xorg now successfully emerges. |
