For the past two days I've not been able to acces the forums from home (Taiwan). At first, I thought this was a temporary glitch, then I realised that there is no such problem when I ssh into my (UK) university shell account.
Does this mean that my home ISP has been blacklisted? If so, why? |

I've not heard of anything like that. Can you do a traceroute to the forums from home? _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Yes, I can traceroute forums.gentroo.org, and I can ping it too, but no access.
If there is no ip filtering going on, what could be the problem?
Especially given that www.gentoo.org works fine. |

Something between here and there is blocking port 80. What happens if you try to telnet to port 80?
Different server, different network, different part of the country. Totally unrelated.

I think there's some correlation between the content discussed on both servers, but sometimes it's hard to tell. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

Too true
I think I misread the tracroute output yesterday. There is always one hop that can't be resolved, always the last but one. I don't know what this means or if it is a problem, but here is the output for your expert advice: Code: |
$ traceroute forums.gentoo.org
traceroute to forums.gentoo.org (66.250.107.251), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets

You're reaching the forums via traceroute -- that hop above confirms as much. Sounds like there's some sort of firewall between you and the forums server that is blocking port 80.

Well, it's working again, so that's a relief.
You say that there may be a firewall issue between home and forums. How come it would only affect some websites and then only sometimes? |

I have no idea. I just know that port 80 is open on the forums server.
