I get a weird error here. I'm using wlan, wireless-tools. The interface (eth0) is up and running, dhcpcd aswell. As you can see I can post here in this forum.
Yet, alot of websites just don't work. Funny thing is, forums.gentoo.org works, www.gentoo.org doesn't. Woot?
I have no idea what might have caused this, I thought my ISP had some problems but when I boot into Windows (same machine) everything works allright.
Yesterday I tried setting up vpnc to connect to my uni's network (worked, btw). I figured this might have caused the problem, maybe some black magic tunneling thing thus I unemerged vpnc and disabled tunneling support in the kernel, but this didn't help.
Btw, the wlan card is an ipw3945.
Any ides would be greatly appreciated. I've kinda run out of them...
Oh, on a little sidenote: I do have another NIC, an Intel Pro/1000 (e1000 driver) which used to work but now complains about EEPROM checksum beeing not valid. I've had this problem before, but back than it was caused by bad RAM. I don't have any RAM problems now, though. Still, maybe there's a connection?

Is this an error only related to HTTP applications? Do e-mail, FTP, etc. work as expected?
As for the vpnc, I also have the TUN/TAP driver inside the kernel and I'm surfing without any problems all the time. (I need the vpnc very seldomly.) So I don't think it's him to cause the trouble. _________________ lxg.de – codebits and tech talk |

Hi Jobbe,
I encounter the problem of "dead" websites every now and then (~once a week?), too. Also in my case, a nearby Windows machine can access the sites I can't. I have found that the problem can be solved by shutting down dhcpcd and getting the IP address again. Although I don't understand why this works...

It sounds like it might be a clamp mss issue. Basically if you are routing the internet to a network the MSS value of packets needs to be set to 1412 to stop certain websites from not working. I', not exactly sure of the reasons why and I have only seen it where I'm installing a server with a direct link to the internet (rather than going through some other router).
So you need clamp mss support in the kernel (there are 2 places it needs to be selected) and you also need clampmss enabled in your pppoe.conf.
Any questions? |

Yeah, what if I'm connected to the inet through a router? Well, I'll try to enable the MSS thingy anyways.
Btw, this error is not confined to http only, it's the same for email and icq.
Thanks for your replies people! |

The router should have clamp mss enabled already unless there is something seriously wrong, so maybe it is just a wireless issue then.
Intermittent interference? The last time I installed a wireless router there were some big refrigerator units that gave enough interference that I needed to install a wireless extender, could there be interference from motors, big power cables or somebody else using a wireless network on the same channel within range of yourself. |

Yeah well I thought about a router-related problem (or even something with my wlan) but, remember, the same machine running windows doesn't have any problems of this kind. It must be related to linux. I'm really trying hard to remember what exactly I did, you know how it is, there's alot you change during installation
You wouldn't think it's somehow related to DRI? I'm asking because I actually managed to get it working yesterday. The only thing I had to change was to compile agpgart into my kernel, but, well, it might interfere in some misterious way. Dunno... |

Well I've compiled in and taken out agpgart without problems on several machines before so I don't think it would be that. Maybe post your kernel config and routing table and les' have a look. |

It could be to do with your linux wireless config also, it could be different in some subtle way to the Windows one. |

Yeah that's right. Too bad I can't really test this, as my other NIC isn't working. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure there is a connection between the invalid EEPROM checksum and the net-problem. I'm not using the wired lan anyway, but both started around the same time...
Gotta try and flash my EEPROM. |

First results: Though I didn't manage to flash the EEPROM I managed to get things going. I tried using the ethernet in Windows and it actually did work, so I figured the EEPROM was quite allright. I booted into Linux, tried modprobe e1000 one desperate last time and, of course, it worked. Strange. So, when the card is plugged in, modprobe doesn't fail and I get all those nice websites I wouldn't get without wired lan. Does this smell like a wlan-driver-bug? I don't know, gonna test things a bit more now...
I'll keep you updated.
Edit: Rebooted without the wire connected, everything's working just fine. Call me stupid, but I don't know what's going on. Anyway, as long as my machine works, I'm happy
I guess this topic is solved... |
