All interested parties,

As a person who does a lot of the work on the nvidia driver ebuilds, I wish to go in and clean them up. Here's what I would like to do:

- Remove all old ebuilds for -kernel and -glx (Unless a certain release is absolutely needed).
- Move -kernel and -glx to x11-drivers (where they should be).
- Create a new pair of ebuilds nvidia-legacy-kernel and nvidia-legacy-glx which will be the last driver that supported older NVIDIA cards.

Thoughts? Are there any problems with what I'm proposing? If you need a specific release of an NVIDIA driver, please tell me which release and why you need it.

I don't like the idea of getting rid of Nvidia ebuilds. I use the 1.0.7174 driver because the versions that came out after that don't handle twinview properly with my card (GeForce 2 Go). I think I also had problems with the latest stable driver after a kernel upgrade.

I told Nvidia about my problems in their forums but I don't think they did anything about it.

It is a pain in the butt to blindly test different Nvidia driver versions but eliminating the choice would make things worse, not better.

Maybe we could post a poll here asking people what version of the Nvidia driver they are using. It would probably be even better to find out their kernel version and Nvidia card too, but I think that would not be possible with just a simple forum poll.

The combination of the closed source drivers and varying compatibility depending on video card and kernel makes it important to provide users with a wide range of Nvidia drivers to choose from.

This is actually a good point. I was ready to say "go for it," but I can see now how the fact that these drivers are closed-source, combined with nVidia's history of relatively frequent releases (even for Linux, although their Windows release pattern is generally insane), might be a good reason not to aggressively remove older versions.

I'm not sure though, having no experience with a card that required an older version of the drivers. I certainly welcome testing these ideas, however. More feedback from users of "legacy" cards would be helpful.

Just a suggestion: perhaps consider renaming this thread to something that indicates you are an ebuild maintainer and you are proposing a change to the nVidia driver ebuilds. That might get more user attention and feedback.

Let's see if that helps.
