|
|
Hi,
I had a working X.org-7.0/KDE-3.5.2 installation but now KDM crashed every time I start it via /etc/init.d/xdm. All I get is a black screen and the busy mouse cursor, but then X/KDM terminates. I'm pretty sure I didn't emerge anything or mess with config files before it stopped working.
X itself works fine when started with startx, i get the usual xterms and no error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
When starting KDM with -debug I get this:

Using startkde or startx with startkde in .xinitrc yields pretty much the same results:

Other login managers like gdm or wdm won't work either, so this is no KDM-specific problem.
By now I've tried everything I could think of - re-emerged X.org-7.0, kdelibs, kdebase, recompiled the kernel, checked filesystems for inconsistency, checked permissions in /tmp, etc...
Unfortunately, I have no idea what's wrong here, so I'd appreciate if someone could help me with this.
Thanks!

EDIT (June 8th): on my system there was some severe mixup with cflags... somehow i screwed up make.conf and make.conf.backup and whatever (i don't fully understand what i managed to bork there...)... anyway: recompiling media-libs/fonconfig without the -ftree-vectorize cflag (that is not even in my emerge --info down there; that is the mixup part that i am still confused about) and with -O3 instead of -Os resulted in a fully working system again. subsequently recompiled my whole system with those settings... hope that helps someone.
i have a very similar problem after the upgrade to gcc-4.1.1. i would REALLY appreciate help here. please!!!
EDIT: startx brings up twm fine. all kde apps and some gtk ups however crash. firefox gives segmentation fault.

@aceFruchtsaft: If you execute "kdm" from the console (without using the /etc/init.d/xdm script) does it still crash?
@gwion: You're issue is different. aceFruchtsaft's problem is KDM doesn't work. You're problem is that next to nothing works. That does not work either, I get exactly the same debugging output.
Maybe I should just downgrade to X.org-6.8.2 and see if that works. |

Before downgrading Xorg, try remerging KDM. I've had KDM work fine with Xorg 7 in the past, so there is no reason it shouldn't work. _________________ Desktop: AMD Athlon64 3800+ Venice Core, 2GB PC3200, 2x160GB 7200rpm Maxtor DiamondMax 10, 2x320GB WD 7200rpm Caviar RE, Nvidia 6600GT 256MB

Why would we want to use kdm/xdm anyway? In any case I doubt it's worth uninstalling Xorg for.
If it's starting X automatically, you might as well put the following in your ~/.bash_profile;
if [ -e /tmp/.X0-lock ]; then
echo "Information: x11 is already running"
else startx

Take your flaming elsewhere. I just asked a question and didn't mean to hurt your feelings regarding kdm. If you like kdm, just use it but take your attitude elsewhere. I don't dislike kdm and I don't want to take it away from you. But if it doesn't work and the remedy is "downgrading" than it might be an option to include my little suggestion if starting X is the only reason he or she uses xdm/kdm. It's an option. Nobody is forcing you. If the topic starter doesn't want to not use kdm, no harm done.
Downgrading, is uninstalling your current version and installing an older version. You can't downgrade without removing your current xorg.
I don't know who has flamed you in the past about your kdm views, but that is no reason to attack anyone suggesting something else. |

Actually, I couldn't care less about KDM since I am the only user on that machine. The same applies for X, but unfortunately I need that one to run KDE and my apps.
The problem is that I cannot start KDE neither by using a login manager nor directly with startkde or startx, so your suggestion would not solve that.
Thanks anyway, guys. |

BTW, downgrading to X.org 6.8.2 did not solve the problem either. So I'd really appreciate any other suggestions, by now I'm really desperate to get this thing working again. |

Thanks for your help. I did an emerge -eD system and that solved the problem; however, I still have no idea what was causing the trouble. |
