problem using su: login doesn't work - is it due to shadow?

Hi there,
i'm using the latest stable shadow (i unemerged pam-login in order to merge shadow). My problem is that i cannot use su or gksu in gnome or in the console to launch applications (i.e. terminal) with root privileges. I always get the error "bad password" so I guess su cannot deal with shadow in some way. Do i need to "emerge pam-login" additionally? I thought that shadow already included pam-login... It's quite annoying to shut down gnome each time I want to do something as root

Yes, only su is bitching around


EDIT: But when I'm in the console (no gui at all) and login as a regular user, I cannot su to root either.

If you can log in as root, then the authentication mechanism is ok.
