I've tried with both the ebuild and the .bin file, it starts fine, and connects fine. But as soon as it starts zooming in towards the surface of the earth then all the imagery in the middle of the screen just disappears. Around the edges then there's still images, but they're completely screwed up relative to the country borders overlaid on the globe. I have most of west mexco in the middle of the pacific...
Also, the text across the bottom of the viewport is messed up, some letters display and others don't.
System is amd64, mostly from the stable tree. Running X.org 7.0 with nVidia's drivers on a 256mb GeForce 6500

I fixed my fonts-too-small problem. It was really a case of DPI set incorrectly for my display. Once I got that fixed all my fonts got bigger, but the point is that the fonts in Google Earth are now readable. |

Workd perfectly, at least, we don't need to run it with Wine now (which gave me buggy fonts). |

I just installed Google Earth from Portage, I am really happy they finally released a Linux version. At startup however it complains about missing fonts: Quote: | You don't seem to have the Bitstream Vera Sans font installed. Most Linux distributions should ship with this font preinstalled. |
Which is not true, I do have the Bitstream Vera font family installed from the media-fonts/ttf-bitstream-vera package and they do show up in all other applications. Anyone else having the same problem? |

Same for me.
Also, when loading it tells me:
Code: | You are running Google Earth in 'OpenGL' with software emulation |
Yet glxgears indicates my 3D acceleration is working. I'm not using the latest xorg so that ati-drivers-8.25.18 work. Does anyone know why it is using software emulation? |

You can do "file *.bin" to find out it is a shell script and then poke around in it with "less *.bin". This led me to: Code: | $ sudo bash GoogleEarthLinux.bin |
|
just let me check I'm reading this right , we are given a closed source binary that requires root priveleges to work .... from an outfit that is about as trustworthy , fair and confidence inspiring as M$ , and no-one bats and eye.
This would not surprise me on Ubuntu but I thought gentooers a bit more switched on.
I hope I'm wrong , I have not gone through installing it yet because I am a bit dubious that this is the case. May be I missed something.
PS any thoughts on running this in chroot at least . What does it actually do that needs sudoing anyway.? _________________ Linux, because I'd rather own a free OS than steal one that's not worth paying for.

It doesn't need root priveleges, it'll install itself in ~/google-earth if it doesn't have them (or wherever else you tell it), also if you open the .bin in a text editor you can see at least some of the installer. I haven't looked in detail so I don't know quite how much you can see. |

googleearth is in Portage now. Interestingly, the display issues I had under Xgl just downloading the .bin and installing it in /opt don't exist with the version installed from the ebuild. I'm not sure I understand why. |

looks like it's been changed in size. I got the same "different" size on a direct download I did earlier today.

Code: | henry ~ # /tmp/google-earth/googleearth-bin
/tmp/google-earth/googleearth-bin: error while loading shared libraries: ./libcomponent.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Same here and the font looks terribly small. Solved by adding this (thanks to the Gentoo German forum although I don't read German):
Code: | echo 12 > ~/.googleearth/Registry/google/googleearthplus/User/render/guifontsize |
EDIT: only for menu and the Place name... the "status bar" on the bottom showing the Long/Lat etc is still using small font

OK , manifest was corrected earlier. Just installed and works beautifully (GeForce4 nvidia) . Loads of posts on Ubuntu as well by saddened ATI supporters. Looks like the drivers are seriously fglrxed. No surprise there of course.
for the sandbox errors try removing kde from USE . I dont have it at all in /etc/make.conf and I dont have the offending file nor the acces violation on installation.
suggest adding a line to /etc/portage/package.use ...

Same problem on AMD64 too.
If I installer G. earth witht the binary, it crashs a few minutes after.... |
I can install it with the binary downloaded from google, and it works too (without crashing), but I also get the access violation from the protage version

I just emerged it on AMD64 without any trouble. It also runs fast as hell!
What portage version are the guys using where the emerge fails? Because I also updated portage to 2.1 before emerging Google Earth. _________________ Ep2.nl | Developers Community |
