AzaraT,
Welcome to gentoo.
The vesa driver should work with any graphics card less than about 8 years old.
nv and nvidia would both be better but for the install, it does not matter.
You can edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf after you get to the command line and restart Xorg, or you can try the ncurses installer by using the nox option on the command line. Read the help in the Fn screens. _________________ Regards,

im pretty noobish to linux so
Well anyway i seems like the vesa driver doesn't works since i tried it on another linux where it works if I choose the nv driver and not the vesa driver..
i dont really get how i should edit the file. When i get to the command line it instant reboot.
edit: oh so I can when i boot from the cd write "gentoo nox" and it will take the command line so i can edit it to the nv driver in the xorg.conf file? |

AzaraT,
Thats right. nox means No Xorg, so it will start without a graphical user interface (GUI)
You can use the text-graphic installer, or fix the GUI.
The text-graphic installer is good enough. _________________ Regards,

AzaraT,
The liveCD you have supports three installers.
If all goes well, it starts the Graphical one. That failed for you, hence your original post.
When you use you tell the liveCD not to start the Graphical installer.
Now when it starts, it tells you to type installer, for an ncurses installer. This is a text based graphical installer and has all the same options as its prettier full Graphical brother. I suggest you use this one - ther is nothing lost to the install, its just not as pretty.
You can also use the command line provided by the liveCD to do a fully manual install, which until the 2006.0 liveCD, was the only way.
You can fix the LiveCD Graphical installer by editing the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf, find the device section and change the driver to one that you like. Then do Code: | /etc/init.d/xdm restart | to attempt to start it. You will have to do this every liveCD boot. Thats why I suggest you use the text based graphical installer. In the course of the install, you will create your own xorg.conf file anyway. _________________ Regards,

AzaraT,
Is there no hint as to what failed ?
Are there any error messages in dmesg, or in the files in /var/log ? _________________ Regards,

Im going to try again and stay with it this time to see whats happening..
And it says the /var/log doesn't excits.. |

okay i tried again with the second kernel on the list(dont remeber name) it was the "safest" the installation is starting but after short time it comes up with this error:
MountError :fatal: mount_local_partitions:
Could not load partition
But anyway, i though i needed to use the livecd kernel right? and when i do that, it crashes without any other error messeges than "the setup program seems to have failed" |
