Yep. Seems I was too quick in posting the update :)

Maybe I should wait a tad bit longer next time .. hahaha

I'm using xgl and compiz for a few days now, and it works great. there are just some smaller problems.

when I play a movie in vlc the buttons are covered until i get over with the mouse. I've seen that mentioned somwhere before. perhaps someone could fix this? it's not that bad, I can live with it for the moment.

the bigger problem is the one I have with blender. sometimes when I move in heavy files in blender or after I'm closing the window of a finished rendering, the x-server crashes and brings me back to the login screen.
anyone experiences the same problems here?

thanks for any hints.

The covering, or corruption is due to Xv and XGL. They don't place nice together. You can re-emerge all your apps with USE="-xv" to solve those problems whenever you get that.

I'll try this, could work for vlc/mplayer. But still having the Problem with Blender which is worse for me. If I can't get this more stable I'll have to go back to "normal" x-org whithout compiz.

wiki seems to say that it's mandatory, but I don't really see why...

thanks !

Well as far as I know it may has something to do with that XGL needs parts from xorg that is too new to be in 6.8.2, alongside with that it is made to substitue the xorg-server package sooner or later and currently shares those parts with that package for the time beeing. But hey, you can always try.

That's why I asked... there would be no point to try, if attempt is going to fail anyway...

I don't use Blender, but I've found that the way to get around problems with playing video is to run the program on the underlying X server. Make sure your Xgl command line includes "-xorgAc" so non-root can do this, and run Blender with DISPLAY=:93 (or :94 if you run Xgl on :1). You won't have any window decorations and Blender will be on all viewports, but this may work around your problems.

We know. And I'm sorry about it, but Coffee is busy, and I don't have access to everything (he owns the hosting account, not I). Though it was almost pointless with all the questions still posted here.

I tend to agree.

We should keep this here and turn down the other forums permanantly. No sense duplicating more than it already is.

I get an error when I start compiz:
Quote:
compiz: Connection Error (Unable to determine the address of the message bus)
compiz: Couldn't initiate D-BUS connection
compiz: Disabling D-BUS Service

Could it be that the ebuild should install some schema if the dbus use-flag is active ?

It isn't an option to use dbus or not in compiz, it's required. I am not sure of any .service files for it.

http://www.compiz.net/viewtopic.php?id=1173&p=1

Code:
... Files included)
dbus.c (goes into compiz src/), dbus.patch, compiz.service
(goes to /usr/share/dbus-1/services or wherever services
files are lying),

this "compiz.service" must be placed in /etc/dbus/system.d I think.

Ok, I hadn't seen that there was a .service file. (I'm not sure on other applications, but I'm surprised it isn't automatically done)

Edit: I found a bug in the Makefile (it isn't including the .service file in 'make dist')

kxdocker appears to be fixed according to this posting in compiz forum
http://www.compiz.net/viewtopic.php?id=1345

However it is done in a .deb package
Does someone here know how to make this fix with
the xgl-coffee/kxdocker from the overlay

For all with the dbus problem, please upgrade to compiz-quinnstorm-0.0.13.3_p20060616. This naming convention will be used when the package is made a day or longer after the quinnstorm release.

Quinn supposedly fixed the compiz.service file not being installed, so it should work now.

Oops.. I screwed up on forgetting to include the adding of the .service to the actual filesystem, it was only included to be in make dist..

For all those who installed _p20060616, please svn up and emerge it again.

Sorry folks for the screwup, I misread Quinn's reply to my bug report.

No, it doesn't. I still cannot find the service file (and it's definitely not copied to /etc/dbus/system.d).

Same problem here, even after latest update. I see the service file as /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.compiz.dbus.service

To clarify, I get the error when trying a killall compiz; compiz --replace gconf & which is how I usually restart compiz without restarting X. Trying to add dbus-launch before compiz --replace gconf doesn't give me an error, but I still don't have window decorations, etc. (change in plugin loading order or something else?).

Can you try svn up, and re-emerge compiz-quinnstorm-0.0.13.3_p20060616 ? I added a patch to change the dbus service file (it was monitoring /usr/bin/compiz.real, not /usr/bin/compiz - I guess debian does some wierd stuff)

I don't see any change in the behavior (the file was updated, I checked). Does it result from something else about dbus? I see the dbus service running just fine, and have even tried a reboot to see if it had any effect (it didn't).

One last thing.. Try this: dbus-launch --auto-syntax --exit-with-session ; <however you start compiz>

Still get the same error and behavior. I see that after dbus-launch --auto-syntax --exit-with-session DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS is still not set, which I guess is why the error still occurs. Either way, even with just dbus-launch compiz --replace gconf still does not work correctly.

Any other ideas, or am I the only one with this problem....? Thanks for your help so far

No, you're not. I posted a bug on the compiz forums about not being able to run compiz without disabling dbus support as it crashes every time. I supplied a backtrace there. I'm running compiz-quinnstorm CVS.
