hey folks,
having a hard time getting my tnt264 card working with X here.. following:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml
just ran..
emerge nvidia-legacy-drivers
now trying
emerge -p nvidia-glx
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies... done!
[blocks B ] x11-drivers/nvidia-legacy-drivers (is blocking media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r6)
[ebuild N ] media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r6
[ebuild N ] media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.6629-r7
can't get glxinfo working:
glxinfo | grep direct
glxinfo: error while loading shared libraries: libGLU.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
also I get x to start, however, wehn I try to open a gnome-terminal, it fails with the exact message from above..
thanks in advance,
Eric |

I believe that the new driver e-builds (nvidia-legacy-drivers, nvidia-drivers) completely replace the older ones (nvidia-kernel, nvidia-glx).
So you shouldn't need to emerge nvidia-glx at all.
You should do an
Code: | eselect opengl set nvidia |
And make sure that your xorg.conf is suitable for OpenGL acceleration. _________________ Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 | Asus P5K | 8GB DDR-2 800

I performed that as well:
Code: |
eselect opengl set nvidia
Switching to nvidia OpenGL interface... done
|
Code: |
glxinfo
glxinfo: error while loading shared libraries: libGLU.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
|
here is my xorg.conf

just out of curiousity, if I removed my
Code: |
=x11-drivers/nvidia-legacy-drivers-1.0.7182
|
from my packages.keywords and then did an emerge nvidia-drivers, would fix the libGLU issue that I'm experiencing? I'm thinking not cause I have a older TNT2 card.. but I'm seriously stumped here and need some ideas.
peace.

To be honest, I would download the drivers directly from the nvidia site and run the installer.
That's what I do to install my graphics driver. Well this is what I do:
1) emerge nvidia-drivers (this installs an older version of the drivers)
2) run the nvidia binary installer (this installs a newer version of the drivers)
I tried doing it without installing the gentoo ebuild, but then it wouldn't let me do an eselect opengl set nvidia. _________________ Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 | Asus P5K | 8GB DDR-2 800

NOOOOO!!! That's a pain in the backside to recover from. Use the ebuilds. The OP's problem is a.n. other issue (that I'll try and take a look at when I get home). _________________ Jingle Jangle Jewellery |

OK, so how do you fool eselect into choosing the correct opengl library if you don't have the nvidia e-builds installed?
Or where can I find documentation to tell me what eselect does? so I can do it by hand.
You have to admit though, the solution would probably fix the OP's existing problem - even though it may lead to others in the future... _________________ Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 | Asus P5K | 8GB DDR-2 800
