Give KOffice a try. If you can live with using applications side by side (low integration level), Abiword, Gnumeric and Gimp may be for you. Then there's Softmaker, offering a commercial alternative. _________________ Please make sure that you have searched for an answer to a question after reading all the relevant docs. |

Code: | # eq office

[I--] [ ] app-office/openoffice-bin-2.0.3 (0) |
I dunno if it's compiled for 64 bit or 32 bit system. But I do know it works. _________________ Everything can be done. There's just a longer delivery time for impossible projects. |

We can use also, abiword, gnumeric and openoffice-bin.
Also, seems that openoffice-2.0.4_rc1 is able to compile on amd64 arch, but it is hardmasked. |

Another vote for KOffice, it's really nice and has a lot of apps and doesn't take as long as OpenOffice to compile. |

OpenOffice does compile for x86_64 - I know because I have had it running on my Fedora box, so the gentoo build must be lacking required patches or be behind
However even given that I strongly prefer GNOME Office (basically all I use is Abiword and GNUmeric.. sometimes GNUcash). |

when i go to #emerge openoffice it say that it is "masked" keyword: "amd64"
i read other place that they do not have a 64bit version, but it is under development. |

OpOf is not worth the time to compile IMO. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Openoffice is worth compiling if you need compatibility. Impress does very good job with Powerpoint files and Writer handles more file formats better than any single application. I don't know how well the other parts of OO compare, but would hope they have similar format capabilities.
Otherwise, I use vi or kate.
Speaking of OO for amd64 take a look at geki's overlay. |

The binary works just as well as far as compatibility is concerned. _________________ "I saw the code for your computer program yesterday. It looked easy. Its just a bunch of typing. And half of the words were spelt wrong. And dont get me started on your over-use of colons."

I've got openoffice-bin and KOffice on here. I really like KOffice, it feels much slicker and generally nice whereas OOo is a crusty old heap with all sorts of weirdnesses. But KOffice doesn't interact with MS Office documents remotely as well, so it's not always an option. _________________ What are you, stupid? |

Openoffice-bin may have been compiled with different USE flags and/or different versions of libraries than your system uses. Sometimes that causes the binary to crash. If that is not the case for you, just keep using the binary. |

Code: |
# emerge openoffice
|
will download the openoffice sources and compile them on your machine (Do not attempt this unless you have at least two processors sharing the compilation load, or you are willing to wait about 15 hours for the compile to finish)
Code: |
# emerge openoffice-bin
|
is an already compiled version of openoffice which portage just pulls off the mirrors and copies to your filesystem. |
