OK, so does anyone know what needs to be done to get Gentoo for OS X up and running properly? What exactly is wrong with the current installer? Is there anything that someone with minimal experience with C and C++ and a good working knowledge of using Gentoo on a PC can do to help? Is there any need for testing on a MacBook Pro? I'd like to help in any way possible.
This is something I think could be really useful and I'd imagine I'm not the only one.
Thanks,

+1
When I was workin on my iBook, I used a lot gentoo portage integrated in Mac Os because it's more friendly than reboot even if I've a second partition with gentoo on it.
What is the current state of this portage integration devellopement at this time ?
Here, a MacBook ready to test !

I might be willing to donate some Powerbook usage too....
But it seems that the devs gave up on Portage OS X _________________ last.fm

There is no way to install it from a "classic" x86 portage ? It could be possible ! _________________ MacBook 13,3" Core2Duo 2,0GHz

I installed Darwinports in my new MacBook. Up to some extent, it reminds me of Portage. It looks better than Fink, at least in x86, and the packages are up to date (up to Gentoo-date ;P )
But I read somewhere that there were efforts to bring Portage, darwinports and Fink together under the same flag (metadistribution?). Is this really going to happen? Soon? Will it happen in x86 Macs too? |

I am thinking of getting an x86 mac as well... so Portage is not yet usable on OSX? Is it best to use Darwinport till Portage is ready? If so, does Darwinport do what Portage do - figures out dependencies, download sources, compile them using CFLAG, USE, etc? _________________ Sunnz's corner - sunNZ.Net forums |

But I believe other people have had better luck. Install it (there are also uninstall instructions if it doesn't work)! Dunno about Darwinports though. (If portage is a no go, install that too!) _________________ last.fm

Which one are you saying is being not useable, Portage or Darwinport?
For those who have used Darwinport... do you know if it compiles the source like Portage or does it do binary install like apt/yum? _________________ Sunnz's corner - sunNZ.Net forums |

Portage, but again that was just me, I know it has worked fine for others.
Darwinports seems to be compiliation (from reading the docs). _________________ last.fm

I just got my macbook in yesterday, resized the partiton and am in the process of installing gentoo on it.
I may go with darwinports for osx because the ports tree is already with freebsd, probably more stable. _________________ My Systems - "I suggest the whole thing be coded in whitespace. Henceforth the code will be obscure and functional at the same time." |

Old-style Gentoo for Mac OS X development is ppc-macos only, and maintained in the tree. No development made on it, in favour of Prefixed Portage (http://gentoo-wiki.com/Portage-prefix) which is expected to work on x86-macos as well as many other systems, without screwing up your Mac if you just want a newer Vim than Apple gave you. _________________ Gentoo on a different level |

Following the instructions for Portage-prefix i downloaded portage-alt-prefix-latest.tar.bz2 and untarred it but when I look inside, there is no configure script so I can't continue with the install. How exactly do you install Portage-prefix? _________________ Those who can make you believe in absurdities can make you commit atrocities. --Voltaire |

I too would like to see how to get this running on an intel mac, in favor of completely removing or even partitioning my OS X partition.
I love the OS X "Pre Fab'd" GUI, but I'd also like to use other programs under said GUI w/o having to compile them from source, and each dep. _________________ | AMD X2 +3500 1GB DDR2 GeForce 9400GT 256MB XP | **MacBook 2.0Ghz 120GB 2GB OS X.5.2** - Deceased | |

OK, the Wiki entry for prefixed portage has been updated to say it is obsolete. Now it directs you here instead. I'm trying it out right now (emergeing system) and so far everything seems to be working fine.
This is so exciting!!! A functioning install of portage on my MacBook! Next will be to try emerging gcc-4.2 beta and ATLAS.
Thanks,

I've started a new thread, chronicling my endeavors to install a prefixed portage here. So far I've listed a couple of problems and the steps I took to solve them. Please, join me in my efforts and post to the aforementioned thread with any problems or solutions you might have.
Thanks,

You can use curl, like this:
Code: | $ curl -o g.com-homepage.html http://www.gentoo.org/ |
where the "-o g.com-homepage.html" means use g.com-homepage.html as the output filename. |
