For those of you who like to fool with USE settings, I suggest making sure you emerge gettext with the nls option ON. Some apps rely on a library from gettext with nls support. I recommend emerge system with nls support on, and then the rest of your emerges without (-nls). (If ,of course you are only using one language)...
