Version 0.5 is out and it seems they are progressing fast:
Quote: | Xara are pleased to announce a milestone target has been achieved with the release of Xara Xtreme LX version 0.5. You can download it from www.xaraxtreme.org/download.
There has been substantial progress since the previous 0.4 stable release. All tools now work, as do most menu options and some of the galleries. We recently passed build number 1000, representing more than 1000 patches, submissions and fixes to the Subversion code repository.
The most important changes are that you can now save designs and export them as bitmaps, so Xara LX is now a functional, useful design tool!
Here's a list of features enabled since the 0.4 release:-
* New Autopackage installer. Xara LX now appears in the Applications menu
* Save
* Bitmap export (JPG, PNG)
* Bitmap import (JPG, PNG)
* Bitmap Gallery
* Colour Gallery
* Layer Gallery and operational layer system
* A choice of document templates
* Guidelines, guide snap and magnetic object snap
* Simple colour editor
* Ability to set the font in the text tool
* Status line & progress bar
* Many new menu items e.g. convert lines to shapes
* Clipviews
* Improved combo boxes, drop down menus, buttons and sliders
* Improved toolbars
* New plug-in system for import/export filters (documentation and example filter code for this will appear on our web site soon)
* Options dialog (and most options now operational)
* Freehand tool smoothing
* Many other features.
* Many bug fixes
* Full comprehensive Help now integrated |
Is there an ebuild yet? |

You can use this ebuild https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=83213 to build from the svn repository. It works well for me. _________________ "There will be more joy in heaven over the tear-bathed face of a repentant sinner than over the white robes of a hundred just men." (LM, 114) |

Problem here!
I tried the ebuild and the precompiled versions from Xara, but I keep getting the following error message when I run the program:
Quote: | XaraLX: cairo-ft-font.c:678: _cairo_ft_unscaled_font_set_scale: Assertion `error == 0' failed.
Aborted
|
Something to do with Cairo as it seems, but I don't know how to alleviate this... any ideas? |

That looks like a problem in the code. Try to emerge it later, it'll probably get fixed soon. |

Yep, you were right. I had the same problem, but tried it today again with version 0.7-r1695 ... and it compiled succesfully
Btw, wondering why this tool isn't in portage yet ... |

Did anybody make it work on amd64?
--- EDIT ---
Just emerging xaralx-0.7_p1744 ...
--- EDIT ---
Emerged with no problems.
Works, fantastic
--- EDIT ---
After some use I found out, that it crashes quite a lot. For now something can be done only by saving work non stop and restarting when crashes occur. This crashes are mostly anounced in a window. Some functions sometimes work and sometimes they don't.
In my opinion its worth waiting for new releases. Software is very cool. I tested a totaly latest cvs release. Maybe it would be more stable with the one xara site suggested. _________________ Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.

I use Xara a lot (always latest SVN build). And I really like it. Since 0.7 the stability has improved much.
I think this thing has to be added to the portage asap. |

I installed xaralx-0.7-r1763. I got the ebuild here https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=126867.
Originally ebuild is made for ~x86 only. I had to add ~amd64 in the ebuild to work on my athlon64.
Code: | KEYWORDS="~x86 ~amd64" |
It compiled ok and works. _________________ Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.

From what I read on their website (I didn't test it recently), it seems, now, pretty stable and featureful. It's probably a matter of a few months, before it might be included.
However, before this, you can use the ebuilds from https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=126867, and it is in the Sunrise overlay, here: http://www.gentoo-sunrise.org/svn/sunrise/media-gfx/xaralx/ (check http://www.gentoo-sunrise.org/sunrise for a short tutorial about adding the Sunrise overlay to your installation).
If you didn't saw it, there was this news, recently: http://applications.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/12/19/2032224, so I guess things will start moving again for Xara Xtreme for Linux, on Gentoo, when the official Xara Xtreme for Linux developers will be able to work again on its development (from http://www.xaraxtreme.org/download/, the lastest build is from 2006-11-14).

Thanks for the info! Actually, I'm using the sunrise-overlay ebuilds for some time now. But nonetheless, I guess I find a portage version more appealing . |

It would be nice if it would be added. It could be hard masked if there are too many problems for now. _________________ Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.

Hi jancici,
I got interested and did a bit of googling.
http://www.xaraxtreme.org/
I don't think there will be an ebuild.
Gerard.
Edit: I d/led the unstable version tar file.
I unpacked it in my /home dir.It's date is nov 7 2007.
But it seems to run ok.
Haven't been able to put it to the test yet though. _________________ To install Gentoo I use sysrescuecd.Based on Gentoo,has firefox to browse Gentoo docs and mc to browse (and edit) files.

Did you try to emerge libstdc?
Look in /usr/portage/sys-libs.
It's libstdc++-v3.
Read the ebuild text and emerge it.
