Hi,
I've got an singe cpu opteron server and was just wondering if these things have 2 virtual cores like hyperthreading?
Code:
cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor       : 0
vendor_id       : AuthenticAMD
cpu family      : 15
model           : 37
model name      : AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 246
stepping        : 1
cpu MHz         : 1993.209
cache size      : 1024 KB
fdiv_bug        : no
hlt_bug         : no
f00f_bug        : no
coma_bug        : no
fpu             : yes
fpu_exception   : yes
cpuid level     : 1
wp              : yes
flags           : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt lm 3dnowext 3dnow up pni lahf_lm ts fid vid ttp
bogomips        : 3991.54

This make it looks like there is only one thread able to run at any time, right?

On most modern processors, even single core ones you usually see the processor twice from /proc/cpuinfo indicating that it has hyperthreading, although I think hyperthreading is a pentium specific feature.

I have the following in my kernel configuration:
Code:
(8) Maximum number of CPUs (2-255)
[*] SMT (Hyperthreading) scheduler support
[*] Multi-core scheduler support

So am I getting the most out of my kernel or is there something more I can do. Is the Opteron supposed to show up twice in /proc/cpuinfo or not?

If your opteron had 2 core you would see it, smp won't cachange anything if you have single core :/

Hyperthreading is Intel only technology.

to get more than one concurrent thread from AMD you need dual core.

Here you can find a list of Opteron processors.

As you can see the "2" digit means that you can use it on dual processor systems (of course you will need another processor and a proper mother board).
