I'm using gnome since ever (even if I was first using E) but there's some things I don't really understand..
=Panels
panels are really ok but I don't really know what to do if I do need a dock applet?
on gnome2 seems docked apps are no more supported in panels, and this was a really interesting thing in gnome1... for example, using licq as dock app is sometime useful (just not to have licq always open or whatever) or having my gkrellm2 monitor in a auto-hiding panel could be useful...
=Desktop
I'm not always seeing my desktop, and I'm one of those who preferr a tidy and clean one... I was told that the desktop is handled by Nautilus, and there was a method to tell Nautilus not to handle the desktop (just a bg image is ok) but how to ?
I'm sure this can also speed up gnome..
- ADD
Here it's specified new Nautilus (still not stable ebuild as it seems) will help you on aligning icons on desktop.
=Themes conf
I'm using Metacity since the dev team decided to use it as default wm instad of Sawfish... ok then... but what the hell... it's a quite idiot thing not to be able to change on the fly the color of the window top bar... no more Crux preferred color??
Seems I need only to use the precompiled themes, or mix the again precompiled Controls, Window Borders and Icons themes...
Apart from the need from the gentoo community to have a Metacity theme of Gentoo (I'm always available if someone will help me) what to do to really customize for any need the window aspects? Sawfish was great in this...
...some other things from anyone who asks...
If enuff infos are collected there could a specific Tips&Tricks thread on this... if you think it's worth... |

Look at this applet:
http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~tetron/technology/swallow/
This is exactly what you're looking for

You need to edit the gconf configuration of Nautilus with gconf-editor
Start the gconf-editor:
Go to Apps->Nautilus->Preferences and unmark Show_Desktop
Don't like Metacity then emerge sawfish

really interesting... it should be ported in the tree... if I only know where to put the exectuables of this applet.. I'll take a look at the gnome dev docs... the configure don't guess those paths, and it installs somewhere gnome can't see... did u already installed it ?

From a maintainers point of view Metacity is much better than any previous WM GNOME has ever used - it has so few preferences that it's easy to support. It's still more configurable than Windows mind you.
Sure it doesn't allow you features x,y and z. That's the whole point, the default should be good, and it is.
Metacity is extremely nice to work with. |

I've gotten used to it, but I'd definitly like to see an always on top/bottom option.
Also, most metacity themes, Alloy probably being the most visible in this, change their color according to the gtk theme. |

always on top is a feature that has been request often and there's a patch in the gnome bugzilla to implement it - but havoc won't include it since only a few of us really need it. I would like it but at the same time I like the simplicity that is GNOME2 so I can live without it, but it's an option you have to apply the patch yourself. |
